A Lit Candle

The Mindil Beach Sunset Market is the place to be on Thursday and Sunday evenings during the Dry in Darwin. Locals and tourists alike bring their own tables, chairs, blankets, and eskies to watch the sun dip into the Arafura Sea and to stuff their faces with heaps of delicious food.

After you’ve had your fill you can explore the many arts and crafts vendors, watch lively buskers or sit under the palms and listen to the live musical performances. 

We loved our nights at the market and the sunsets were some of the most beautiful we have seen during our time in Australia. Oh, and did I mention it’s BYOB? Perfection. 

Our trip on the Corroboree Billabong was, without a doubt, the best day we had in the Northern Territory, and it happened on July 1st, Territory Day! We went out with Dorian and Ernie (Mel’s cousin and uncle) bright and early, arriving before sunrise.

It was here that we saw our first saltwater crocodiles, our first jabiru (the colloquial name for a black-necked stork), a sea eagle, a water buffalo up close (relatively), pelicans, a comb-crested jacana, and various species of herons and egrets.

The billabong was massive, winding through flood plains for kilometres. It was absolutely wonderful to be surrounded by so much wildlife and open air. We spent several hours there but time passed quickly and we felt peaceful, with perma-grins stamped across our faces.
