As it turned out, sourcing replacement tyres for the 13x4.0B Weds wheels on our little Honda Vamos workhorse was proving to be quite difficult. 14” tyres were a little easier to come by, so we used the opportunity to fit a set of XTREME-J RUGGED wheels in a whopping 14x5.0J+45 specification. Back in 2010 when I created the website that eventually became STL, all I wanted was an S13. I read every build thread I could find on the Driftworks forum, hoping that one day I could start a similar project of my own. In 2012 (back when a running, driving and MOT’d S13 could be had for less than £1000) I finally got my chance, when I picked up a UK-spec, CA18-powered car. Over the two years that followed I drove the S13 everywhere; to work, to meets and to all-nighters at the local industrial estates. I crashed it a lot, spent far too many late nights fixing it but, most importantly, I met a lot of people along the way and made a lot of friends. The S13’s final event was the first Finalboss Matsuri at Driftland, back in 2014. On the second day I had quite a spectacular/hilarious crash and had to cobble the front suspension back together for the long drive home. A coolant hose eventually split somewhere on the M6 motorway and, as I watched the S13 get towed onto the back of an AA truck, I didn’t realise that this would be the last time that it moved under its own steam. All of the usable parts were eventually moved over to a PS13 shell that I acquired, and the S13 shell sat dormant for a year or two until it was sold. Recently, an opportunity arose to buy this shell back. For nostalgia alone, I thought it would be great to have it somewhere where I could take a look at it every day and think about how far STL has come since those early days. It’ll take many hundreds of hours of cutting, welding and fabricating before this S13 will see a road or track again but, despite this, I’m determined to get back in the drivers seat one day. It might be used as a basic drift car, or perhaps even a more extreme track day car.
