the last one about internet linguistics is really interesting! i’d love to read it if you ever write an essay on it!
well it would probably come down to a psycholinguistic experiment - showing people text posts with similar content but differences in capitalisation and/or punctuation and see if they perceive them differently. could also be interesting regarding age group.
where’s the difference when i write “yes”, “yes!!!”, and “yES”? what about “no”, “nope”, “nah”? “No.”, “noooo”, “nO”?
if i replace a full stop with “lmao” or “rip” or just leave it out altogether, how does it change the connotation of my text?
Do I sound more serious if I use the correct English capitalisation, spelling, and punctuation in my texts? or can i like just write whatever i want and you still think the same of me lol
one could write a whole separate essay about the power of “also” as a connector between unrelated ideas
do people read “rip” as a word, an abbreviation, or a sentence? does it have other connotations if i change it to “rest in peace”, “RIP”, or “R.I.P”?
is “lol” still an abbreviation or has it taken on content word functions of its own? same for “lmao”, “omg” etc
does internet english have the same rules as “normal” english? what are the strategies to convey tone of voice, intention, and sarcasm?
i could go on… to me it’s like an entire field that hasn’t been explored yet because it’s so new and changing really fast. but yeah if any of you want to open up an international research group as soon as we all have our PhD’s I’d be glad to join lmao (see what i did there?)
