I was thinking about the various holidays that Doof lists in “I Really Don’t Hate Christmas” and some of them I can understand, or maybe most of them, but then I was like, wtf does he have against Flag Day? I’ve always thought Flag Day is merely just some boring holiday that I’ve never once celebrated, but he says it’s infernal. To him Flag Day literally comes from the depths of hell. Kind of a strong reaction.
So this lead me to do a little wikipediaing on Flag Day. Flag Day is a boring holiday every June 14 that commemorates the adoption of the original 13 star American flag. Now, as we know from This Is Your Backstory, Doof is not very fond of America. I can only assume that his loathing of Flag Day is related. He’s been living in America for like 30 years but he still hates it.
But wait, there’s more. Accompanying this lyric is a visual aid. Here we have a bunch of chorus girls all carrying flags
So it seems he’s not just talking about Flag Day in America. The US flag is there but it’s not the only one.
This lead me to wonder, do these countries shown actually celebrate Flag Day?
First of all, Scotland 🏴 doesn’t, so they already got that wrong.
It’s hard to tell which country the second one is. However, it doesn’t matter because out of all the countries with red and white stripes, none of them celebrate Flag Day.
The United Kingdom 🇬🇧 doesn’t celebrate it.
The next one could be Romania 🇷🇴, which does celebrate Flag Day on June 26. However, it could also be Chad 🇹🇩, which does not celebrate Flag Day.
And then there’s the US flag 🇺🇸 as previously discussed.
So all I can gather from this is that….uhhh... idk. I guess either Jon Colton Barry or Piero Piluso (the storyboard artists for this episode) didn’t really know what Flag Day was and they thought it was just about a bunch of flags. I also guess Doof is very anti vexillology. This is called vexiphobia according to google. He’s just a mean old vexiphobe
