yusuke had to learn to fight because he was the neurodivergent child of a single alcoholic mother and had nobody else to look out for him. he wears a different uniform for sensory + color preference reasons, smokes to self medicate, and skips school altogether because it's intensely stressful and frustrating and sets off his demand avoidance

kuwabara learned to fight because he wanted to be a cool hero like his favorite characters in TV, manga and video games. in reality he is a huge geek, he just doesn't perform well in school because there are zero accommodations or supports for his condition.
