Chapter 3: The Arrival
The ride was pure silence.
It felt like both Natasha and Steve knew this was a difficult decision for me so they gave me a moment of silence on the way.
The silence was interupted when Steve announced our arrival. An airport.
"Okay we’re here, I'll get your bags and Nat will bring you to the plane."
"Plane? I thought we were driving? I’ve never been in a plane before."
The fear in my voice was obvious.
"It's pivotal that we get you to Washington as soon as possible but don't worry it’s a government owned plane everything will be fine."
Steves reassurance gave me some comfort and I followed Natasha to the plane. I have never seen anything like this. It’s luxurious.
30 minutes after I left my home town and I’m already experiencing that was something I could only daydreamed about. The worry soon turned into awe and excitement.
Natasha sat down in on of the leather seats and I sat across from her.
"I know this is all so strange. I Just want to make sure you know you can trust me and Steve no matter what. Things might look different for you now so just know you’re not alone.”
“Thank you Miss Romanov. It’s just sudden and none of this is my life. The cameras. The spotlight. I mean I just turned 19."
"I know… it feels like a lot right now. Call me Nat. We are gonna be around each other a lot so we can drop the formalities.”
in that moment Steve came onto the plane.
“Alright. Everything’s good to go."
He took a seat next to me. Sitting next to 2 of the most known faces. This is also something I never would of imagined experiencing.
It wasn’t until we were steady in the air when I was able to breathe and relax that’s when I took a moment to analyze the man to my right. I would be lying if I didn't say he was one of the most attractive people I’ve ever seen. The only men l ever really get to see in my hometown are grown men who are considered family. Safe to say we don't have the most eligible bachelors to gawk at. I didn't realize how hyper-focused I was on his chest until Steve let out a chuckle.
My eyes shot up to his. He was looking straight at me with a smug smirk on his face.
"See something interesting?"
"Oh- I wasn't- I'm super spacey right now. It's been a long day."
I could feel my face getting hot. Staring at this man who's closer to my fathers age then my own. I immediately turned away out of pure embarrassment.
"Spacey? Not the worst excuse I've heard."
"Mmm cocky much Rogers?"
"In my defense," Steve said obviously amused that he caught me, "you weren't being very subtle."
It wasn't until now when I remembered Nat was still here.
"Easy, Cap. She isn't gawking at you."
"It's crazy," you chimed in, "that the most you've said to me today was when it involved you."
"It wasn't intentional," he admitted. "I had bigger things on my mind. We weren't exactly sure you'd agree to come with us."
"Well here I am."
"Here you are."
I couldn't help but think that this might not be the worse two weeks of my life. At least the conversations have been entertaining.
After what felt like an eternity the plane touched down. Finally. Steve was first to get off and me and Nat followed him. He led us over to another pick up truck which almost looked identical to the one that they were in back home.
"Please," I begged, "tell me this is the last form of transportation I'll need to be taking today?"
"Yes," Nat let out with a chuckle, "This is a private company airport so the drive should only take a few minuets."
"Thank God."
We made it to the compound and it was beyond words. Huge. Intimidating. The worries and nervousness crept back into my stomach leaving me with knots.
"This is the Triskelion," Nat began, "We were instructed to let you settle in for the night and then I'll come and get you for interviews in the morning. Unfortunately, I am going to have to leave you in the hands of Cap right now so rest well and I'll see you in the morning."
"I can't tell if that was an insult or not." Steve said in response.
"Aw okay. Well thanks Nat for everything today. I'll see you tomorrow."
Nat waved us goodbye and left to take care of whatever other task she was assigned.
"Alright, well let's get you up to your room."
Steve grabbed my bags out of the back with impressive ease and led me into the compound. Immediately upon entry I was overwhelmed with the amount of people. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents at every turn, rushing around, working. It amazes me how all these people contribute so much to the safety of our world but in here they seem like ants in and ant bed.
I struggled keeping up with Steve as he walked with such purpose but I couldn't help but gander at everything I was walking past.
"Catch up Trouble."
"Excuse me? Trouble?" I asked, offended by this inaccurate nickname, "That is the least fitting nickname you could've picked."
"We were supposed to be here an hour ago but you caused trouble upon meeting." Steve said defensively, “I think trouble is the most fitting name I could've given you."
You scoffed, “What do you expect to happen when you come knocking on a 19 year olds door and then trying to convince her to let you kidnap her.”
“Kidnap? Doll, you should’ve known this was coming.”
Another nickname. Fantastic.
At that moment we made a left and were met with a metal door. This can’t be it. This can’t be wear I’m staying.
“Alright, home sweet home.”
“No.”
“What do you mean ‘No’?” Steve asked confused.
“No. Just No. I’m not staying in a jail cell.”
“See, you are trouble.”
He followed that comment with opening the door and bringing my bags in. He dropped them on the bed and that’s when I realized just how real this has gotten. The knots in my stomach got tighter. What have I gotten myself into? I rested on the door frame hoping to postpone my fate.
“Steve?” I asked timidly.
“Yes?”
“What’s going to happen to me.”
I could visibly see his demeanor change once he could read the worry on my face. He got gentle.
“I’m sure Nat has already told you this,” he said coming closer to me, “but you can trust us. You can trust this company. And you can certainly trust Nat and me.”
“I can trust you? I barely know you.” I shot back.
“Fair… but it might comfort you to try.”
At this point I had already moved to the bed and Steve took my spot on the door frame.
"Yeah, I guess so, I just hope this all gets done and over with quick."
"Well tomorrow will be the start of getting it done. But now you need to rest."
He started turning around to leave and I called out for one for thing.
"Rogers?"
"Yes?" He said in a sarcastically exhausted tone.
I gave him a smile
"I'm hungry."
"You're hungry?" He said back to me, shocked thats what I had to ask.
"Hey old man! If I remember correctly you were the one who interrupted my dinner."
I can't lie the thought of food has been on my mind since I left home. I regret not taking dinner with me. God, I already miss my mom.
Steve was obviously confused, either with what I called him or with how he was planing to handle this situation. His job was strictly get me from point A to point B not try to keep me alive on the way.
"First off, old man? really?," ding ding ding, struck a chord, "Second, I'll send someone up here with some food for you. It shouldn't be too long okay?"
"Don't act like you haven't been called that before, except this time it makes sense. What are you? 28?"
"Hey! I don't have to get food sent up here. And it's 30."
"Jesus, so you really are an old man!" I held in my laugh but it felt fun being able to get under Captain America's skin like this.
"Don't forget Doll." Steve said with a smirk coming across his face, "You were the one checking me out earlier."
Shit. He got me there.
"Whatever you want to believe old man." I responded, "You wish I was checking you out."
"A few hours ago I never would of expected you to be such a firecracker trouble."
"You caught me in a moment. This is me... Rogers."
I couldn't help but add a little flirty touch to the end of that comment. I mean, I'm only gonna be here for a week or two and who knows if I ever even see Steve after this. Might as well have fun when I can.
"Goodnight Trouble." With that he walked out, closing the door behind him.
Now, alone in this strange depressing grey room I pull out my phone and check the time. Shit. 8 pm already. I head to bathroom and finally get ready to wash a day of traveling and the hospital off of me.
After that and after a mundane cafeteria meal left at my door, I was in bed. All I could do was lay there, staring at the ceiling and thinking to myself...
I just want to go home.

An 18+ Steve Rogers FanFic

Chapter two: The Visit
1 Week Later
We haven’t talked much about what we saw In the mine. We didn't need to. The news stations did enough of that for us and after being in the hospital the past week it was inescapable. Everyone knew about happened.
Everyone knew what I did and everyone likes to act like they knew what happened everyone but me it seems.
“Finally!!”
My dad was relieved the moment we entered the front of the house. Having suffered a broken leg from the beam he felt like a week in the hospital wasn’t necessary. That’s just the kind of man he is. Always down playing injuries even when they are very much so serious.
"Come on honey, it wasn't that bad"
"Cafeteria food and cameras in our faces Isn’t exactly what I would consider paradise.”
“I don’t know about you mom but I’m with dad on this one. It'll be nice to stay home for longer than just the time it took for us to shower and grab dad more clothes.”
“Fine, fine, I understand. Now go get yourself ready for dinner. It shouldn't take too long to be ready. "
I went upstairs to my room and grabbed me a fresh pair pajamas and head to the bathroom to shower and wash all the hospital off of me. I looked up from the sink and into the miror staring at my reflection. I haven’t been able to focus this past week worrying about my dad in the hospital but whenever I get quiet moments to myself like this I think back to that day.
what was that?
what is wrong with me?
And why are both of my parents not addressing it? Everyone else in the nation seems to care more than my parents maybe they’re in shock like me. Trying to piece together any other logic explanation how that beam was moved.
As I was still deep in my thoughts, forgetting the original reason I was in the bathroom in the first place my attention was redirect to the knock that just landed on the front door.
I started my way down the stairs when my mom opened the door.
"Hello, are you Mrs. Bennett?"
| couldnt see who was at the door all I could hear was what sounded like a woman’s voice.
"Oh. Miss Romanov, Mr. Rogers, yes I’m Mrs. Bennett. Come in. Come in."
By this time I am already at the bottom of the stairs, bare feet transitioning from carpet to cold floor.
Rogers? Romanov? As in two of the most well known heros in the world?
Surely not.
I got the answer however when the two of them made their way into our home. It was them. But why?
"You must be the other miss Bennett." Steve Rogers said after I came around the corner.
He was tall. Muscular. And Seemed to be wearing a tight shirt one size too small. He looked even more God-like in person compared to the clips of him on the news. Accompanying him was no other than Natasha Romanov, who like Steve looked even more impressive in person.
“Yes. This is my daughter Victoria. Come this way. I just made dinner. Would y’all like dinner? Have some dinner with us!”
My mother responded for me in a confused, hectic and if I’m not mistaken, worried.
I don’t blame her however. I would be lying if I was confused and worried as to why these two super beings would be here. In my home. Especially after what happened a week earlier.
“Oh no thank you ma’am. Actually we were hoping to talk to you, your husband and your daughter. As quickly as possible.” Steve responded in a semi-stern, semi-polite, as if he needed to make sure what he was saying came off as more of an order than a request.
"Oh... My husband is in the living room. Come on Tori."
I could tell my mothers worries were increasing and so was I.
Once all 5 of us were gathered in our small and simple living room Natasha began.
"So, I know this is a weird situation and we are probably the last two people y'all were expecting to see today but we were sent here on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D. to discuss the recent events that have occurred."
Natasha looked at me near the end of that sentance and I felt the palms of my hands start to sweat. As if my mother could tell, she grabbed my hand.
"I know that what we're about to say is going to come off sudden and maybe even a little scary. Especially since you're only, what, 17? 18-"
"19. I'm 19." I cut in. I wanted this conversation to get over with as sudden as it had started.
"What we're trying to say," Steve started, "We are going to need you to come back with us to the agency. We need to talk about your powers and how they transpired."
"Powers? No, No, you're mistaken. What happened was something else. I don't know. Some science thing happened, that's all!"
I was scrambling desperately for any logical explanation as to why what happened had happened. Anything to get me out of this. I wasn't going to leave. I am not going to Washington.
"Listen. Miss.Bennett, even if there's a chance that what happened was of a supernatural nature you'll need to come with us."
Steve was persistent.
"It's Victoria, and why do I feel like I'm getting arrested right now? I didn't do anything wrong! Mom? Dad?"
"Hon, maybe you need to."
The first time my dad spoke through this whole "intervention" and it felt like a stab in the back.
"Dad!"
"Tor, think about this logically. I was there. We both know what we saw that day. These people deal with these things everyday. They're government officials, what ever this thing is that is happening right now, we can't just ignore."
"I know this is sudden sweetie but it won't be for long I suppose. They'll help you."
I was losing it! Why are they talking like something is wrong with me. Like I have something that needs to be fixed. Why are they so okay with just letting me go?
"Help me?! There's nothing wrong with me!"
"It won't be for long. We just need to figure out how this originated, if it'll happen again, and if you need to learn how to control them. It could be as short as 2 weeks."
When Natasha spoke she provided comfort and understanding, as if she is familiar with the idea of feeling different. Feeling like something is wrong with you. Unlike Steve who made it seem like just another mission to execute.
"Think of it kind of like a trip Tor. We have never been able to show you the world. You are stuck in a world of nothing but ash. This would be good for you."
My mom sounded hopeful and on board with the idea.
"2 weeks? That's it?" I asked Natasha.
"Potentially."
My head was spinning. I don't know what the right thing to do is. My dad just got out of the hospital. I can't just leave.
"But dad, you just got home from the hospital. And what about work? What if you need help around the house?"
I was rambling.
My mom grabbed my face and kissed me on the forehead.
"Tor, go, We'll be fine. I know this is scary and new but it needs to be done, we both know this. I can't have you live the way you had been leading up to that moment again. No sleep. Nightmares. I want this to help you and I know you want that too. Sue will understand."
After another minute of hesitation I could tell Natasha and Steve were eager for the approval that they can take me and I broke.
"Ok, ok, fine. I'll go."
I wasn't sure how much or what I needed to pack so I kind of kept it to my usual wardrobe. I had everything I need. Including a picture of my parents I had folded into my jacket pocket. I can't believe I'm doing this. For the first time I am leaving the only place I've ever called home. It shouldn't be for long and then I can go back to my normal, simple life.
I walk my bags half way down the stairs before Steve met me in the middle and grabbed them for me. My parents waited for me by the door.
"Oh honey, you're going to be just fine."
I hugged my mom and then went over to my dad.
"You'll be back before you know it."
The goodbye felt long. Hard. Painful. It felt as if this was goodbye forever. They hugged me so tight as if I was genuinely moving away for good.
"We need to get moving." Natasha said while resting her hand on my shoulder.
"Okay. I'm ready."
Steve was already at the truck, putting my luggage in the back. I walked out with Natasha and she led me to the front seat. After we all got in and settled I looked over to my parents standing on the front porch. We waved goodbye as I drove off into the unknown.
The ride out of my town was more bitter than sweet. I can't lie the idea of seeing new things excited me but I was leaving all I ever known. But it won't be for long. It won't be forever. Right?

Chapter One: The Uncovering
Vanceburg, West Virginia. That's the small depressing town that I’ve called home for as long as I’ve known. There isn’t much too this town, a diner, a grocery store, and the only reason anyone still lives here, the coal mining facility. The nearest city is an hour and a half away, and we're practically erased from every map. Nothing interesting happens here, ever, well until recently.
"You're late. Again."
"Sorry Sue, won't happen again."
"That's what you've said every day for the past week Tor."
I believe Sue has worked at this diner for as long as Vanceburg has existed. She's an old and yet lively woman who never fails to let me know when I'm late.
"I know Sue, I don't know what's been going on with me lately. I haven't been sleeping well. I have this reoccurring dream-"
"Everyone has dreams hon, but we still have places to be."
"But these dreams are draining me, it seems so real. I'll really try my best though."
"Alright hon, you know I just worry about you. It isn't like you to be late like this."
"I know. I'm worried too."
I head to the back of the diner and started getting myself ready for my shift. Waking up 5 minuets before I need to clock in doesn't leave me the time to get ready at home anymore. While I'm putting my hair in the usual ponytail and tying my apron around my waist my vision starts to get blurry.
"Not again, not now."
For the past few days I haven't only been having a horrific reoccurring dream causing me lack of sleep and angry Sue confrontations but I've also been experiencing waves of lightheadedness. I don't know what's been happening to me lately but it's not good. I steady myself before heading out to get the diner ready for the evening. Being the only source of food in a 90 mile radius means the breakfast, lunch and dinner hours are packed with coal mining men covered in soot from head to toe looking to get a break and a good meal before they go back in. The mess left behind isn't something I'm unfamiliar with considering my dad is also one of the miners working day and night, but it sure makes the cleaning tasks ten times harder. As soon as I finish wiping down the last booth back to it's original color, I see the next wave of men walking over from the mining facility.
"Hey girls! Y'all open?" The men asked as they came in and made themselves comfortable in a corner booth.
"For you John? Always."
With my father having been working for years now all of his work friends have practically become family to me and John is the closest thing to an uncle I've ever had.
"Where's my dad John?" I asked in confusion. He never misses their usual dinner meet ups.
"Ah, we had a new guy start today and your dad being the man he is volunteered to keep him under his wing. You know how he is. He shouldn't be much longer, they're just finishing something up real quick."
"Alright. Let me go get y'all some coffee."
"You know us so well."
"How couldn't I? Since y'all come in and dirty our booths everyday."
The group of men let out low tired laughs as I went to get their drinks.
I reached for the full pot of fresh coffee and stopped in my tracks. Something felt off. Something felt familiar.
Clash
My head shot up and saw a sight I know to well. A sight I have seen every night.
"Shit, I cut my finger! Tor can you pick that up while I get a band aid?" Sue asked.
No! No! No! This can't be happening. How could this be happening. I bent down and the second my hand touched the glass the earth shook beneath me.
Waaaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaaaah
The alarms.
Dad.
I was frozen in my place. Am I dreaming? My disbelief was shattered by the sound of men cursing and rushing out the door.
This is real.
Without hesitation, already knowing whats about to unfold, I rush out with the rest of the men. Now at a full sprint I made it over to the entrance of the mine. Chaos around me as men rushed for medical kits and emergency responders.
”It isn’t stable! Bennett’s trapped! He can’t move!”
The young man ran out of the mine. Must be the new guy my dad was with. I have to get to him. I rushed into the darkness. Before I could even realize what I was doing I was deep in the dimly lit tunnel.
“Guys! Over here! Help!”
That familiar voice. I ran. Followed the screams until I was right in front of my dad. Crushed under a massive support beam weighing tons, it would take forever to get him free. We don’t have the time.
”Tori?! What are you doing?! Get out of here! NOW!”
”I can’t dad! I can’t leave you!”
Before he could continue to protest a loud aggressive roar came from the left of my father. A rogue coal cart. Hurrying straight towards him. Fast! What can I do? What can I possibly do? My dreams would end here. Leaving me with the hopeless feeling that nothing could be done. My father is about to die right in front of me and nothing can be done.
Less than a second later the cart was almost right on my father. The emergency rescue crew and workers showed up to the scene. Too late. It was too late. The fear. The hopelessness. The anger for what was about to happen to my father. I let it all out.
”NOOOOOOO”
Throwing my hands up I reached towards my dad. In that one swift motion the support beam sealing my father to his fate shot up and flew towards the left. With a loud crash everything went silent. No more roaring. The cart was stopped. The crew rushed to my dad and we sat there staring at each other, frozen in the confusion of what just happened.
“Come on Tori! We need to leave! It isn’t stable!”
John grabbed me and we followed after my father and the crew out of the mine. The camera crews were everywhere hoping to record a tragedy but left with confusion.
”THAT SHIT WAS CRAZY! He should be dead! His daughter made that beam shoot across the mine! I’ve never seen anything like it!” The young guy who was with my father just moments ago in the mine was frantically trying to explain the series of events to the reporters.
”What did I do?”
I was asking John frantically for clarification. He was there. He saw what I did. “I don’t know… I don’t know.”
