The Thief Lord. Written by Cornelia Funke and cover artwork by me. For our spring promo, The Cat Agency artists reinterpreted our favorite stories. The Thief Lord was one of my favorite books growing up and definitely played a part in my love for reading. I just reread it for this illustration and it holds up. The lion is a crucial symbol throughout the book and repeated often. I was surprised to see that none of the previous editions of the book included it on the cover. In addition to a lion, I also wanted to include the protagonist, Scipio, in a way that would help build up his mystique. After the initial plot twist is revealed (no spoilers) the reader might look at the cover a little differently, noticing Scipio’s uncertain expression. I wanted the cover image to contain enough information that a young reader could come back to it again and again as they progressed through the story. I would love to hear what you all think. Especially if you love this book like I do.
