August 23rd.
This has been one of my all time favourite days for nine years now. I’ve never been big on celebrating my own birthday… I’ve never seen anything worth celebrating in my past. But today? Today is about you, Scott. And every way you’ve changed not only my life, but the world around us with your beautiful heart, your pure soul and your blinding smile. It’s a day to reflect on the man that saw past the cracks that comprised my being and decided the reflection was worth loving. It’s a day to adore the man who makes my children light up brighter than the sun with his smile and his encouraging words. A moment in the chaos of a year to remember what a selfless, brave, devoted human I get to call mine. This day is about spoiling you, and being so thankful for your existence. Don’t get me wrong, baby. You can ask any and all of our friends, our family, our co-workers… I do this every day. But your birthday is the day I get to do it as loud as I fucking want, because it’s a day solely about you.
You are my favourite. Everything. Smile, laugh, pain in the ass, co-conspirator, voice of reason. You’re my partner on screen and off, in crime, in life and love. The one constant in a sea of changes. I’ve said before that I didn’t know the extent… but that the day we met… I knew you’d be important. I sometimes wish I’d known at that moment that this would one day be the significance. The time we lost, the time we are still gleefully catching up on… would have been ours from the start. These nights we spend touching because we are drawn together as though by magnets or the mornings spent trying to wake up with coffee and kisses and our sweet little babies bounding in to join us… could have been the only reality we’ve ever known. But I think, had that been the case… we wouldn’t be as strong as we are. Together. We’ve weathered so much. Faced so many storms… and those struggles and hurts are what drew us back together- the need to find anchor in one another. We needed to face the fire to find our place in the ashes and start over. I am so grateful for every single scorch mark… because they remind me that this love isn’t something that can be destroyed. The world’s already tried and failed.
You are more than my love. More than my life. You are my entire being. Without you, there is no me. We both know that’s the been the case long before it came from a place of love so desperate it still leaves me in tears. So much of the man I am is tied to the man you are… because your love and your influence has changed me in the most profound, shaking, and lasting ways. It has made me someone strong, brave, fierce and driven. You are the strongest pillar I’ve ever had to lean on and I hope you don’t think for a second that I take that blessing for granted. I’ve made mistakes. So many… more than a typical couple could come through, and you’ve met them all with patience, compassion and devotion. You’re the reason my heart beats. Literally, now. And I am so in awe of every moment spent with you. Happy 42nd, my ‘uhane. May this year be the easy breath you deserve. May you accomplish all your heart desires, and may you greet 43 fulfilled… and still being kissed at midnight by your idiot, animalistic, adoring husband. I love you.
