No one talks about how tough building a career in backstage theatre is.
8 interviews in two weeks, 8 rejections all because other candidates had more experience, but how are you supposed to gain experience if no one hiress you, despite being qualified, because there are more experienced candidates you're up against?
You send hundreds of job applications into the void, mostly to never hear a peep in response. Handing in CV's to stage doors, countless interviews or assessments, all to hear either nothing or no. And I don't know which is worse. 46 applications in thr last month, that's more than 1 a day. And for most the response is either 'need more experience' or nothing at all.
And all the advice on how to gain experience is pointless because I live in London, so I can't gain experience in a local regional theatre, I need to make money to pay for food and rent, so work FOH at theayres or at pubs, therefore I can't help with amateur productions or risk being unable to pay rent or afford food, which is already astruggle on a regular basis between contracts anyway because your minimum wage day-jobs barely supports you while you send application after application into the void to hear in response either 'no' or dead silence.
