Walking meditation at QE park
If you grew up with suburban mooks universally wearing Abercrombie & Fitch, and headed to a high school today, you might be in for a surprise. The company has struggled in the recession years, and young people are turning towards brands like H&M. A&F is responding by taking their logos off their clothes, and presenting themselves as laid-back and sophisticated, rather than hyper-branded and luxuriously aspirational.
In fact, some are saying that young people are defining their social groups through clothing less than ever. Not sure if Iâm buying it, but this is what Piper-Jaffrey analyst Steff Wissink told The New Yorker:
âTen years ago, I could walk into an auditorium of two hundred kids, I could turn my back and tell them to switch seats and scramble.â Then, she said, she would turn around and guess which kids belonged to the same social groups according to what they were wearingâusually with great success. âToday,â she said, âitâs next to impossible.â
The real question: where are these auditoriums of 200 kids that are subject to the coldly capitalistic social experiments of retail analysts?
Anyway, itâs nice that Abercrombie is struggling.

In general, I think we need to move away from the premise that being a good person is a fixed immutable characteristic and shift towards seeing being good as a practice. And it is a practice that we carry out by engaging with our imperfections. We need to shift towards thinking that being a good person is like being a clean person. Being a clean person is something you maintain and work on every day.We donât assume âI am a clean person therefore I donât need to brush my teeth.â When someone suggests to us that we have something stuck in our teeth we donât say to them âWhat do you mean I have something stuck in my teethâbut Iâm a clean person?!â

Secret city design tricks manipulate your behaviour
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20131202-dirty-tricks-of-city-design
When Selena Savic walks down a city street, she sees it differently to most people. Whereas other designers might admire the architecture, Savic sees a host of hidden tricks intended to manipulate our behaviour and choices without us realising â from benches that are deliberately uncomfortable to sculptures that keep certain citizens away.
Modern cities are rife with these âunpleasant designsâ, says Savic, a PhD student at the Ecole Polytechnique Federerale de Lausanne in Switzerland, who co-authored a book on the subject this year. Once you know these secret tricks are there, it will transform how you see your surroundings. âWe call this a silent agent,â says Savic. âThese designs are hidden, or not apparent to people they donât target.â Are you aware of how your city is manipulating you?
In 1999, the UK opened a Design Against Crime research centre, and authorities in Australia and the US have since followed suit. Many of the interventions these groups pioneered are familiar today: such as boundary marks painted around cashpoints to instil an implied privacy zone and prevent âshoulder surfingâ.
San Francisco, the birthplace of street skateboarding, was also the first city to design solutions such as âpigâs earsâ â metal flanges added to the corner edges of pavements and low walls to deter skateboarders. These periodic bumps along the edge create a barrier that would send a skateboarder tumbling if they tried to jump and slide along.
Indeed, one of the main criticisms of such design is that it aims to exclude already marginalised populations such as youths or the homeless. Unpleasant design, Savic says, âis there to make things pleasant, but for a very particular audience. So in the general case, itâs pleasant for families, but not pleasant for junkies.â
Preventing rough sleeping is a recurring theme. Any space that someone might lie down in, or even sit too long, is likely to see spikes, railings, stones or bollards added. In the Canadian city of Calgary, authorities covered the ground beneath the Louise Bridge with thousands of bowling ball-sized rocks. This unusual landscaping feature wasnât for the aesthetic benefit of pedestrians walking along the nearby path, but part of a plan to displace the homeless population that took shelter under the bridge.
So next time youâre walking down the street, take a closer look at that bench or bus shelter. It may be trying to change the way you behave.
Here!! Read this and be fucking angry because this is horrific! !
