Combat

I’ve always had a thing for turn based combat (HSR, Pokémon, etc) but FE really surprised me with its unique style.

I guess I got the hang of it… ish. You see, just because I enjoy it does NOT mean I’m good at it.

I came into Conquest knowing it was going to be hard and the people were not lying.

If I’m gonna be honest I got my ass absolutely whooped despite playing on the lowest difficulties (sorry to all the female gamers out there, just set us back a century).

I quite enjoyed having to rewire my brain and taking an absurd amount of time completing each battle since I was able to mentally prepare myself for the story.

The hit rates really had me on edge. After losing a 98%/2% I was scarred for the rest of the game (Xander plsssssss).

Maybe next time I’ll be able to play without dying every other turn.

Characters

Oh my god.

Put simply: I love them a lot. The designs are the main reason why I decided to begin the franchise with fates.

I started the game because of Corrin in smash bros (both are awesome) and ended up loving all the royals.

Camilla does favor Corrin the most, but she cares for them all so dearly. Her support convos with Niles and Leo enfbtjrkelsa… I’ll have to work to see more of her support convos soon.

Elise will always be baby sister to me. When she set aside her rivalry with Sakura to be her friend warmed my heart.

Leo naturally grew on me (fake nonchalant geniuses for the win). He wants to be cared for and not just be treated as the genius boy next to Xander yet still is hesitant to accept that recognition 🥹

Xander’s personality won me over easily. He treats Corrin so sweetly how could I not?? His comfort when Corrin faces challenges and reassurance through reminding Corrin that they’re the leader and their siblings are here to support them aweee.

And Takumi’s character is a nice contrast to the rest of the siblings. I can see why he’s pretty popular amongst fans as he’s the most memorable for not glazing you all the time. I find that I relate to him the most so liking him came easy.

The way they go against their father to accompany you is adorable. They love you so so so much I was quite literally fawning over them at all times.

Story

Prior to playing the game I read the summaries on the fandom wiki because I could not wait. Whoops.

But luckily I’m bad at retaining information except for the parts where Takumi and Ryoma die… and Xander and Elise in Birthright. yeah.

And for that reason I was bracing for impact the entire time. I’m weak.

They had many cute moments where I’m just like awhhhhh they don’t know they’re doomed.

Chapter 18 a personal fav for that reason (izana’s little chapter where nohr royals and Hoshido royals are forced to be nice to each other).

Oooh you guys COULD be such great friends but unfortunately this is conquest.

I wish that we got to see a bit of Garon before he was possessed. I found it really hard to connect with the Nohr siblings’ reluctance to kill their father since well… he’s tried to kill us at every turn but it’s okay I still feel bad as it wasn’t Garon himself (or at least, I know I’m supposed to).

And honestly because of that the ending is underwhelming to me?? I don’t know. I felt like I was forcing my attachment towards them all of a sudden. As much as I wanted to I physically couldn’t feel anything for them. Yeah I guess I feel bad but I should be feeling worse, Yknow?

Despite that, I feel horrible for Hinoka and Sakura. I’ve never lost someone close to me before but I could definitely feel their pain that they don’t get to freely express in game. But it probably stings to fulfill a wish that others were supposed to see with you, especially both your brothers and your mother. (Revelations for the win)

Azura “leaving” after the war was the final stab after getting headshotted twice and gutted three times.

I adore her and Corrin’s relationship. How they both want to see their siblings happy, supporting each other when things get rough, and their parallel backstories. Truly is sweet to have a friend like her.

Marriage

Okay soooo I actually completed the game before I got to the marriage part 😅

I prioritized the story before anything so support conversations did not come easily

Also… I’m sure there’s at least one other person who felt sour about having to marry off their one of their favs for the sake of gameplay because I sure was!!

I think the fates games in general are an interesting way of being introduced to the marriage mechanic considering the loopholes they had to throw in to make it work with Corrin as our mc

I’m not gonna beat a dead horse here so moving on

Other

A good game. It’s definitely not perfect, though I had lots of fun struggling.

I really didn’t want to beat it so soon, but I knew that if I slept on it for too long I would be sleeping on it forever.

I’m a little scared to move onto birthright and revelations (via YouTube probably, too dumb for sailing the seven seas/unsure if I wanna buy brithright yet) since I don’t want to consume all the canon content quickly.

Which is why I bought warriors, solely to see them again.

Side note, I got both conquest and warriors on the same day, yet I completed one and dropped the other within 30 minutes. The difference is that I find the twin mcs in warriors to be annoying, but I’ll give them another chance + that’s for another time.

I’m glad that I decided to go all in with buying and playing conquest myself. I’m hoping this interest will stick !!
