A few literary suggestions for Black History Month
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Maybe you know Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from when Beyoncé sampled her TEDx talk, “We should all be feminists,” or maybe you’ve been following her emergence as one of the most prominent voices of African literature over the last two decades. Her latest novel, Americanah, was selected by The New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books of 2013.
Edna Lewis
Edna Lewis had a hell of a career. She worked her way up as a seamstress, eventually fashioning a dress for Marilyn Monroe. Then she became the first African-American celebrity chef. Then she broke her leg, so she wrote a cookbook. The Taste of Country Cooking was interspersed with personal stories of growing up in a freed-slave settled town in Virginia, and redefined what many thought of Southern food.
Roxane Gay
Roxane Gay (@roxanegay), famed author of Bad Feminist, is a Tumblr favorite, and not just because you can follow her. She writes about what it means to be a woman of color. She’s the first Black woman to write for Marvel, and she’s writing queer WOC into their storylines. She pulled her unreleased book from publishers Simon & Schuster after their deal with Milo Yiannopoulos was announced. It’s easy to admire her actions as much as her writing.
Follow these too:
Afro Editions (@afroeditions) posts and reblogs all things Black lit, including this bell hooks Valentine’s Day card and these suggestions for Black sci-fi.
The Center for African-American Poetry and Poetics (@caapoetryandpoetics) highlights exactly what you think it will.
Bonus: We highlighted it last year, but Black Children’s Books and Authors (@blackchildrensbooksandauthors) deserves a spotlight on it again.
Don’t miss our upcoming BHM Answer Times. This week and next week, we have:

I dare you to turn it on and not dance! #relivingyhetour 💃🏽#Stevie
Last week @soul_minister preached about pain. He took his text from Jeremiah 29. It really hit me hard because when I opened my Bible I saw the note he wrote me while he was in the hospital. I read this passage of scripture everyday he was there. I so need this @voh317 sermon series this month. Right on time. #OUCH #voh317 #followthepurplerobot
The 0rigin Story Of Batman
Batman is the best Super Hero because he has no super powers. He makes cool things to use in his crime fighting, like the Bat-Car and the Bat-Jet. He also was trained by Raja Ghoul on how to fight, and has great fighting skills. In addition to those things, he has Robin and Batgirl to help him fight crime.
Robin and Batgirl use their own technology to help Batman catch villains. Robin has his jetpack and the Robin Cycle. Batgirl has the Bat-cycle, and together, they help Batman fight villains. Batman has fought villains like Firefly, Harley Quinn, and the Joker.
Later on, Batman joins the Justice League. The Justice League includes Hawkgirl, Superman, Martian Manhunter, The Atom, and many others. This helps Batman to be stronger as a part of the team.
My 11 year old's first blog post! I'm so very proud of him. Trying anyway I can to foster an appreciation for written communication.
Have you made plans to attend @voh317 WIZ watch party tomorrow night? If no, why not? Come hang with us. It will be a blast!
"You Are Gorgeous...."
There are few greater feelings than the one you feel when you’re having a silly moment with your Husband or the one you love than when he stops, his face takes on a look of awe, and he says “You. Are. Gorgeous.”
This is how my day started. I was sitting on the side of the bed laughing with my husband…not too far gone from sleep, no makeup, hair wrapped up, and maybe even a little sleep left in my eyes. Appearance far from what society would label “gorgeous”.
There was a time in life that I would have rolled my eyes and begin to rattle off all of the reasons that he shouldn’t see or feel that way. But today I was able to let the words penetrate. I believed him. Not only do I believe him, but I agree with him! I am thankful that I am able to honestly say that and humbled because it came with a lot of work and much prayer.
I know that the beauty I feel and the beauty that he is able to observe comes from the inside out. Today, it is hard to believe a beauty that delves deeper than surface is actually attainable. I’m a witness that it is!
You’re gorgeous! ;-)
Because this needs to be shared again. I'm reminded!

I can't respect a person who won't deal with heir issues and pass them off on others. Especially children. These children become adults sent into the world damaged and no tools for healing. #ManipulativeParenting. #PassiveAggressiveParenting #my4AMthoughts #parenting #emotionalhealth #mentalhealth
