the house has the virtue of generosity, meaning they are highly giving and often kind to the people around them. because of this, the maren's have the ability to heal others of any wound, no matter how life-threatening. this virtue does have limits though: the more a faery heals others, the more that fatigue sets in. for example, if a faery heals others non-stop, by the end of the day, they will be extremely exhausted.

faeries that are higher on the spectrum can heal others easier, and can go longer without breaks and less fatigue sets in, while lower-spectrum faeries can heal only a certain caliber of wounds. for example, a higher spectrum faery can reattach a severed arm onto a person. a lower spectrum faery can only heal things that are more superficial like cuts, scraps, or bruises. if a faery is more in the middle—perhaps a level three—then they can heal more serious wounds that cause more of a threat to life.

much like the other virtues, faeries can't improve their skill and in turn improve their virtue's level. but, maren's that have knowledge on anatomy and physiology have an easier time targeting areas that need healing, without causing extra demage to themselves.

as for the fatigue, it's not just the caliber of the wound that can cause fatigue, but the amount of faeries that a person heals in one day. for example, fiona vespertine-maren heals wounded troops. she heals tons of troops a day, and even though some of their wounds may be less life-threatening, she will be tired no matter what. in fact, if a faery were to heal a serious wound, but that were their only wound to heal, they wouldn't tire—but this is extremely dependent on the faery and their spectrum level.

thea is considered to be an extremely kind and likeable person. she has the stereotypical southern charm that comes along with a bright smile and jokes. people who know thea describe her as a reliable person who's easy to talk to and spend time with. she is level-headed person who can face adversity and pressure with a calm exterior, though most of the time, this is a front.

she is also very emotionally guarded, mainly because of the way she was raised. this makes it hard for thea to reveal her vulnerable feelings outside of anger and happiness. because of this, it's harder for thea to open up to others and create intimate relationships that aren't superficial. to overcome her guarded-ness, thea makes up for it with humor and a multitude of masks that she can easily switch to fit people or situations.

one of thea's biggest fears is being judged, especially by strangers, which also fuels her desire to hide vulnerable feelings. when thea keeps her emotions bottled up, they usually burst out in the form of anger, which is another mask to hide her true emotions. kaladin was one of the first people kaladin ever met who was able to see past her guardedness and make her comfortable enough to share her vulnerabilities without judgement.

thea isn't violent or harsh, but she can handle herself and stick up for herself when the time is right. when thea is overwhelmed, she is the type to shut down and continue to guard herself with anger or silence. she prefers coping alone, rather than with others, because she is her own best friend when it comes to emotions.

mainly, thea struggles with feelings of self-judgement, but when she's not struggling with negative emotions, thea is the type of person who is mostly happy. and unlike her other emotions, she's never afraid to show her joy or spread it to others positively.

thea, much like kaladin, can profile others—but on a much less skilled level than him (until she got the vigil). thea uses this skill to learn other personalities and basically change her mask to fit what they need. she doesn't change her personality in anyway, but she knows how to talk and connect with all sorts of people.

thea pet peeve is being ignored. because she is the oldest siblings, she was used to being ignored when she was younger, but as she's grown, it's become a huge annoyance if someone does it to her.

thea values things like control and organization, and she is considered a type a person. but thea can be extremely judgmental to others, though it is usually from a place of love, and she will always try and solve things she deems as problems in others.

the virtue of cognizance for the etraya's can become a heavily relied upon ability. faeries that overuse this ability become dependent, and it is especially important that a faery doesn't become dependent on their virtue, especially something like profiling or emotion-reading.

a faery that is extremely skilled with their virtue can also be extremely self-aware. this can cause depression, anxiety, self-criticism, and social disconnection. this makes it harder for faeries to connect with others, despite the ability to profile or emotion-read.

velanora koa-etraya is a great example. she has a heightened sense of self-awareness, which makes her have depression. she also has a tendency to be anti-social, and she is extremely picky when it comes to her inner circle.

depression or anxiety because of this virtue can't be avoided, especially if the faery is highly skilled, but virtuous counseling can give the faery coping mechanisms for their virtue, as well as regular therapy for depression and anxiety.

the virtue of cognizance is a virtue that is considered a violation of privacy. faeries that don't know or understand the virtue are afraid of being read by etraya's because they think their secrets will be displayed very publicly.

this is especially true for etraya's that are in relationships. partners of etraya's that don't understand virtue's, are afraid of being read by their significant other, and many times, etraya's read their partners without permission, which causes arguments or even breakups.

other times, faeries find this virtue endearing. specifically, for kaladin, it was almost a sort of fetish for woman that he slept with because they always wanted to be read. at first, kaladin enjoyed the attention, but eventually, he started to feel like he had little worth beyond his virtue, which caused him to need counseling with father alo. this is the reason he stopped sleeping around as much as he did.

the house of etraya has the vice of arrogance, meaning they can exaggerate their own sense of importance or their abilities. this vice can affect their relationships and reputation, but it also makes it harder for etraya's to admit their own insecurities or weaknesses.

the only way to personally overcome this vice is to be self-aware of this specific weakness, and attend the neccessary counseling to overcome it.

virtuous counseling are therapy sessions for children that are growing into their virtues and vices. the priest of a province will sit with children during counseling appointments and give them advice, coping mechanisms and techniques on how to use their virtue to the fullest and not become a victim of their vice.

virtuous counseling can last weeks, months and even years, but it's proven that children who haven't taken virtuous counseling—especially if they're higher on the spectrum—are much more likely to suffer from their vice, and this makes them less likely to create deeper relationships, make friends, and beat the stigma's that surround their virtue.

mostly, priests of a province are loosely or directly related to the major houses, so often, it is much easier for children because they are familiar with their priest, making counseling less obligatory and more enjoyable.

seraph's hold is also performed a couple of times over the course of virtuous counseling to bless the child and wish them happy experiences with their virtue.

but, virtuous counseling doesn't just have to be for a child, but any adults, but it's usually less long term.

as mentioned before virtuous counseling isn't only for higher level faeries, but faeries of all levels. but, faeries that are higher on the spectrum have a higher chance of being a victim of their vice, thus their counseling usually lasts for longer.

the spectrum of virtuousness is a spectrum used to determine a faeries abilities. of course, this only applies to faeries who have blended or are directly related to major houses. the more skilled a faery is with their virtue, the higher they are on the spectrum. for example, a level five faery would be extremely skilled at their virtue. while a lower level faery wouldn't be as skilled.

most major house faeries have some semblance of a virtue, but a lot of faeries don't. just because a faery is born within a major house, doesn't mean they're guaranteed to have a virtue, which fortunately means they can't be a victim of their houses vice as much as a higher spectrum faery could.

the house of etraya—who govern the province of khloris vale—have the virtue of cognizance. the virtue of cognizance gives the etraya's the ability to profile others and read their emotions, with little to no effort. profiling is described as the analysis of a person's psychological and behavioral characteristics. and it includes examining a person with just a simple look and recognizing their weaknesses, habits, fears and strengths.

emotion reading on the other hand is exactly what it sounds like: being able to read someone's emotions by analyzing their micro expressions, which are brief involuntary emotion tells that flash across a persons face in less than a second.

profiling and emotion reading aren't exclusive to etraya's, but their adeptness is unattainable for a common faery. etraya's that are higher on the spectrum of virtuousness are much more skilled and can easily read emotions or profile, though some faeries can emotion-read, but not profile. for example, kaia koa-etraya is a level three for profiling, but she can't emotion-read.

i got the idea for profiling and emotion reading from the book the naturals by jennifer lynn barnes who does a great job at showing how supernatural and extraordinary her characters' powers are. i also used criminal minds as an example, which has the FBI's behavioral analysis unit tracking down serial killers by profiling their behavior and psychological tendencies.

a virtue is an honorable trait that the seraphim embedded into the five major houses. specifically, the seraphim wanted her faeries to represent the morality and virtuousness she deemed admirable in humans.

vices on the other hand are meant to balance the power that virtues gave the major house faeries. for example, the house of etraya have the virtue of cognizance, while their vice is arrogance.

minor houses—the houses created after the five major houses—don't have virtues or vices, unless they've directly blended with the major families.

but all faeries in aitheair have basic abilities, like the ability to glamour themselves, shapeshift and connect to the realm. though glamours only affect humans, and most faeries have never encountered humans before.

all faeries can also be a victim of vices, it's just much broader. for example, a common faery not a part of a major house could become arrogant or greedy just as much as a major house faery. but a major house faery who's high on the spectrum just has a greater chance of being a victim of their specific house's vice. and most of the time, being a victim of your vice as a major house faery has greater consequences than the common faery.

virtues themselves are measured by a spectrum. some major house faeries may not be born with a virtue at all while others are and might be extremely skilled. but, dual-major house faeries (faeries born from two major houses) can be born with both or none of their major houses' virtues. for example, kaladin is a koa and an etraya. he's a level five profiler and emotion-reader, but only on a level three for zoolingualism (the ability to talk to animals).

when i was worldbuilding, it was really important to me that i give the generalized faeries abilities, so they would still feel supernatural or magical in a way. i've read a couple of faery books like the cruel prince, which i think is a really great representation of the stereotypical faeries that have these really weird abilities, as well as the fact that they are extremely intertwined with nature.
