â a hard, unlucky life, and now this. â â cali come to bother u
@islacalifornia
And now this. A pretty common sentiment, nowadays. âThat could honestly apply to so many things right now.â Keahi idly drew wandering lines on the table as she pondered on how to flip this one around. Everythingâs already gloomy, doesnât mean they have to be. âBut hey, that makes it easier for things to look up.âÂ
* the passage starters
the passage is a novel by justin cronin. tw: blood and violence.
â know how it ends? â
â whatever you say. â
â itâs blood. a lot of it. â
â donât do anything stupid. â
â somebodyâs outside. â
â itâs hard to explain. â
â a hard, unlucky life, and now this. â
â lie down. be still. â
â thereâll be time later, okay? â
â this world, with its little things. â
â but iâll look after you like i said. â
â you got a fever or anything? â
â let me look to see if youâre hurt. â
â i gotta go lie down for a while. â
â you should eat. â
â we went back to the house and i put you to bed. â
â and i know iâm going to worry about you every day of my life. but i am proud of you. â
â iâm sorry. i shouldnât have woken you. â
â no oneâs mad at you. â
â what you did, you did on faith. â
â you should get some rest. â
â stay awake for me. can you do that? until i fall asleep. â
â i think i ate something bad. â
â drink your tea. â
â you need your sleep. â
â weâre safe here. â
â nothing about this makes any sense. â
â jesus, that hurt. â
â whatâs that down there? â
â is that so fucking hard? am i not being absolutely clear here? â
â oh, donât go being sorry now. â
â a dumb idea. â
â go look it up. the story of noah and the ark. â
â decided it was better this way. â
â like removing a big splinter. â
â some of that is just dehydration. â
â it looks like someone used a blade. â
â are you burned? are you cut? â
â somebodyâs going to love you. â
â i think you better look at this. â
â why is everybody looking at me like that? â
â am i asleep? â
â thanks for keeping me company. â
â letâs be honest with each other. â
â am i dreaming you? â
â well, letâs have a look. i know you got it on you. â

âYou heard me. Those rumors and memes âbout the FBI tracking us through our phones? Yeah, all true. I have to ditch almost all of my devices whenever I go ghost without notifying my boss first, or else heâll send people after me. He treats me like an object. An object, Keahi. More so than any of my previous presidents have ever done. Iâm like a living trophy to him.âÂ
Alfred could go on and on about how much he wanted to escape the Donald, but then theyâd be in the kitchen until dawn. âWhat? âs just pocket money.â Clearly, they had different budget expectations. âWeâve already closed up shop twice as of yesterday,â Euphemism for âgovernment shutdownâ. âAnd I believe in the special counsel investigation team.â At least for the time being.Â
She glanced back towards the living room where her phone lay, discarded on the couch. All plans for keeping it with her for the day? Discarded. Easy enough, considering she habitually goes off radar. âOkay, you know Iâm on youâre side on this one. And if the government comes kicking down the door, you run. Iâll distract âem.âÂ
Though her tone was joking, Keahi had every intent of following through should it happen. But in the meantime, she leaned against the doorframe, a little amazed and just a tinge melancholic. âWeâll get through this.â She mumbled, fixing her gaze on Koa and petting his head. She quickly glanced back up, though, typical upbeat Keahi back in place.Â
âOkay, Iâm across the hall. Bathrooms connected to your room. But -â Keahi stopped, crossing her arms and attempting to look as serious as possible while grabbing her scarf from a hall shelf.Â
âWeâre going outside. No re-runs. Koa can come with. I donât care what we do, itâs your choice, honestly. But itâs outside.â Indoors? The entire time? Not with this good of weather, sorry Alfred.Â
As far as I walk from my roots, they grow to reachâ and that teaches me everything I need to know about being good.

exsuperatus:
As if meeting the she-devilsâ gazes would cast his soul away, he cautiously maneuvered around the young woman before him so that his back blocked off excess social tension. He then smoothed out his navy suit jacket with care despite there being not a single visible wrinkle on the pressed fabric.Â
âWell enough, thank you. And yours?â He barely turned his head the moment a light object slid off its oval platter and hit his right shoulder; not even the waiter responsible looked behind himself to check why his serving plate suddenly felt a smidgen lighter. The stench of seafood wafted upwards, along with a hint of lime. Without looking down, he already knew he had been served shrimp cocktail against his will.Â
His smile remained intact while he pinched a discarded shrimp tail between two gloved fingers and dabbed it on his sauce-covered shoulder. âI wonder how they could tell I was hungry.âÂ
A deadly stare caught Keahiâs eye as he somehow moved to exactly block it from her line of sight. They didnât look like particularly pleasant people, but curiousity grabbed hold of her. When her companion spoke, though, she did her best to focus.
âAh, yes, itâs been lovely.â A slight pause preceded her response. Keahi had almost forgotten she asked the question, thoughts having been focused on the now hidden glares. She was about to continue with a comment when, to his side, a slight shine of silver - the glimmer of a platter - tipping in what seemed to be in the absolute slowest fashion possible, had decided to serve her newfound companion without his consent.
Her own gloved hand quickly shot up in an attempt to casually hide her smile at his reaction. The slight stain against his suited shoulder brought her expression to concern. âH-hold on a moment, Iâll find a cloth or - â Her own shoulder felt the impact before she realized what had happened. Keahiâs abrupt turn drove her right into a waiterâs arm, outreached to offer her a glass of champagne (or was this one wine? She couldnât remember.) A hand quickly shot up to hold up the now half empty glass, but the damage had been done. Rose red folds of her dress were now a smidgen darker here and there.
Keahi shook her head with a smile at the proffered apologies from the waiter before he ran off in search of something to clean her dress. âYou wouldnât happen to be thirsty as well, would you?â She asked as she turned back to the original conversation, a single hand offering him the half-full glass.Â

âIâve been hiding in my hotel room and watching reruns.â With his dominant arm still wrapped around Koa, he scooped up the dog as if it were his own and started wandering the residence in search of the guest room. âWhere are we rooming? I ought to measure things out before they install my indoor hot tub.â He said this with a straight face. âI lied. I donât like hot tubs that much. No offense if you own one.â Â
âI gotta ask you something real quick. Do you think The Donald will last all four years? âs already been about 9 months, and people were confident he wouldnât make it to half a year.â Quite the nickname for his president, wouldnât you agree? Not just Donald: he was THE Donald. âI mightâve dropped a couple thousand in a betting pool. If youâre willing to help with placing bets, Iâll split the money with you.âÂ
âHiding? Reruns?â She mutters, attention still focused on the remaining batter on her spoon as Alfred gets up. He got on a ridiculously long flight to sit in a hotel and watch reruns? A soft exhale of disbelief passes her lips, followed by an eye roll at his hot tub comment. âNope. Iâve got the beach a couple blocks away ... last door on the right, by the way.â
Keahi finally gets up from her chair, tossing the now batter-free spoon into the sink before finding where Alfred had wandered off to.Â
âSure, Iâll help out, but...wait.â Keahi, who had originally been trailing behind Alfred, now moved to stand in front of him. âDid you just say a couple thousand? And on how long HEâS gonna last? Alfred, I swear -.â THE Donald? A good one, but still not as dissociative of the person as she would like. A simple he (the distinguisher from any other âheâsâ being the annoyance of tone) works wonders for her.Â
First Impressions
For a moment, Keahi was worried he would be upset. It would have been understandable. At his words and expression, though, a smile quickly warmed her own features.Â
âHardly.â Keahi wasnât quite prepared to let him take all the blame. âI hope your evening has been going well, sir?âÂ
Was small talk with someone you accidentally ran into proper? She wasnât sure, but she would have felt awkward leaving immediately. The very least she could do was hold a conversation. No one was waiting for her and she had no intentions of doing anything specifically, and best of all, Armstrong couldnât easily drag himself into the conversation. As free-willed as she was taught to be, Armstrong seemed intent on holding her to the highest of standards. Â
Standards she could usually exemplify, even if this evening wasnât the greatest start to modeling them.Â
First Impressions
@exsuperatus
She was glad San Francisco was on the water. Passing breezes, cooled by the Pacific waters, eased her anxieties and allowed her occasional moments of respite. To this end, Keahi leant herself out the window, inhaling the clean air. Chatter from the city intermingled with music emanating from the hotel, providing a soft melody to distract her thoughts with. Going by the tune, it was almost time to join the festivities.Â
âMy lady.â William Armstrong, cabinet member of the government of Hawaiâi, walked up beside Keahi, offering an arm. She accepted with the norm and grace expected of her, and with the Kingâs nodded approval, the group made their way towards the doors of the ball.
Their entrance and the moments that followed passed in a colorful blur, whispers and open chatter swirling around her ears. Though initially overwhelmed, Keahi was full of curiosity. She had never left her islands before and yet, for the first time in a week, if she closed her eyes she could almost be attending a party in Hawaiâi.Â
Step by step, Keahi drew away from Armstrong. First by a loosening of her fingers, such that the weight was barely there. He quickly became embroiled in a discussion with the King, and there she saw her chance.Â
Knowing she would have Kalakauaâs approval, Keahi slipped off of Armstrongâs arm to wander the length of the ballroom, anxious to see all that was available. In her wonderment, she managed to just barely avoid collision with a waiter, but instead ended up tripping right into another ball attendee.Â
â-- I am so sorry.â She automatically began, hurriedly righting herself.
What a lovely start to the evening.

So may I say, Governor, again, the moment is this when we have been able to favor the tradition, the culture, the history of this beautiful new State, it is one that makes us realize and look to our past, a proud past, a great State, a great ideal, and I can only add what I said at the airport, that Hawaii brings to the United States a great lesson which the United States must carry to all the world.
