The Fated was alight with electric purple strobe lights that flashed in your face in every direction. It felt magnificent to breathe in the scent of sinners, adulterers and naive kids about to step into the real world. Your fingers toyed with the rim of the glass, hoping that you’d meet the eye of a pretty human to feast your eyes on. The gradual build up of musk and the taste of spirits had you dazed on heightened euphoria. 

Your eyes grazed over the people that keep touching you. Those of a higher realm may snarl at the mortality of their skin but you. You enjoy it. You hear the thrumming of the hyperventilating heart and rejoice at their pretty human features. Your teeth puncture your bottom lip and the metallic taste doesn’t quite match up to the blood of those around you. 

With a subtle desperation to quench your hunger, your saviour comes in the form of a boy. He has golden skin and wicked looking eyes that make your body shiver. He reminds you of a young Greek god. A pity. He would’ve been incorporated in the infamous sculptures and poetry that line all of Europe. 

A true pity. But not a downright shame. 

You want to giggle at the way the bodies magically move out of the way as you approach him. You feel like the main star. The protagonist on a Broadway stage as she meets the man who woos her into oblivion. With a strategic slight bite on the lip, you rest your fingers on his shoulder so it curves into the crease of his neck. You’re overjoyed that your spirit had chosen such a pretty shuttle for you to feast as you please without having the need to tip toe around status, age and beauty. 

You lean in, wanting to whisper in his ear in a way that leaves tingles down his spine. But you find yourself pausing before you have a chance. 

Seated at the bar is someone you had expected to see, but not quite this fast. He looks the same, but you never tire of it. His chin is jutted out as he glares into you. Ripping you apart in his thoughts. He twirls at the sturdy blade in his hand and his features become more prominent as he clenches his jaw. The blood in your veins bubble and ripple at the thought of those hands on you. 

Kang Yeosang is a hunter. A hunter that should have you pleading for forgiveness and considering death. He, however, sends your endorphins higher and you feel glitched at how the sight of him has such a hold on you where everything in your body tells you he shouldn’t. It tells you to run away. Yet, you stay. 

You purr, ‘Fun.’ 

Never once turning your back toward him, you return to the entourage of bodies crowded behind you. He slowly rises to stand and your eyes make the detour down his body to the combat boots he wears on his feet and the way his pants stretch over his crotch and thighs. 

You grow excited as he starts to quicken his pace and something akin to fear is begging your legs to run. Ignoring the voice in your head, you trail your fingers down the lit hallway of the club. You feel like you’re reeling a predator in your presence. It’s exhilarating in the way you know any upperhand you feel is misread and false. 

His chest stretches as he rolls his shoulders back and stretches at the muscles in his neck. 

‘You look well,” Yeosang states as he rubs at the underside of his blade with the material wrapped around his wrist. 

“Do you prefer this look better on me, Angel?” You flirt in such a saccharine way that it has his eyes slitting into a thin straight line. 

Your lips stretch into a naughty smile as he approaches you. It unnerves him how easily you give in to his need for dominance. The back of your shoulders meet the club wall who has seen the same fate over and over again with other couples. But none are quite like the two of you. 

Without touching your hair or face, he harshly connects your lips together. You grin into the kiss, obediently keeping your hands by your waist but gradually curling with impatience as he continues to kiss you at the same languid pace. Your fingers hook at the fabric that curves at his hips, pulling him in closer. 

That is the only time he allows himself to smile before teasingly pulling away. Close enough so that your lips barely touch and you can still feel the kiss on your skin. With a brush of a hand through your hair, he hooks his palm around your neck before bringing you closer to his frame. You gasp as he fervently brushed his tongue against yours. You melt into him as he pressed kisses into your neck, pulling quiet moans of pleasure from your soul. 

Unable to help yourself, you nip at his bottom lip to welcome the taste of blood. You relish in it. You hum in delight. He nonchalantly allows you to taste his blood and instead, wraps his arms around your torso to bring you closer to him. Somewhat drunk on his blood, your hand wanders down his body, stopping only briefly to tease at his belt buckle. Prey gets a taste of predator and you’re addicted to it. 

Your sultry and charming demeanour from before has all but disappeared in front of Kang Yeosang who demands dominance and attention when he walks into a room. He is a man to be worshipped and he knows it. That’s why when you look at him, he looks down with his chin slightly jutted upwards and you’re always looking up. 

Then, he grins. Smugness sticks to his expression like a bug as he wipes away his own blood that marks his bottom lip. He thumbs at it, wiping it clean before he looks at you, egotistical and sultry. 

You see yourself in him. 

“I’ll see you in the next life,” Yeosang promises as he impales the knife straight through your heart. White hot pain overwhelms you like a leech and crawls through your body before you collapse on the floor with your eyes wide open. Dead in this life and continuing onto the next. 

Yeosang smiles at your corpse and kneels down, brushing the strands of hair from your face, smoothing your eyes shut to make you appear as if you were sleeping, “Goodbye my love.”

My name is Brandon Boulware and, Chairman, I’ll go as quickly as I can.

I’m a lifelong Missourian, I’m a business lawyer, I’m a Christian, I’m the son of a Methodist minister, I’m a husband, and I’m the father of four kids - two boys, two girls - including a wonderful and beautiful transgender daughter. Today happens to be her birthday. And I chose to be here. She doesn’t know that. She thinks I’m at work.

One thing I often hear when transgender issues are discussed is,

“I don’t get it. I don’t understand.“

And I would expect some of you to have said that and to feel the same way. I didn’t get it either. For years, I didn’t get it. For years, I would not let my daughter wear girl clothes. I did not let her play with girl toys. I forced my daughter to wear boy clothes, and get short haircuts, and play on boys’ sports teams.

Why did I do this? To protect my child. I did not want my daughter or her siblings to get teased. And truth be told, I did it to protect myself as well. I wanted to avoid those inevitable questions as to why my child did not look and act like a boy.

My child was miserable. I cannot overstate that. She was absolutely miserable. Especially at school. No confidence, no friends, no laughter. I can honestly say this - I had a child who did not smile. We did that for years. We did that against the advice of teachers, therapists, and other experts.

I remember the day everything changed for me.

I got home from work, and my daughter and her brother were on the front lawn. And she had sneaked on one of her older sister’s play dresses. And they wanted to go across the street and play with the neighbors’ kids.

It was time for dinner, I said, “Come in.” She asked, can she go across the street. I said no. She asked me if she went inside and put on boy clothes, can she then go across the street and play.

And it was then that it hit me. My daughter was equating being good with being someone else. I was teaching her to deny who she is. As a parent, the one thing we cannot do, the one thing, is silence our child’s spirit. And so on that day, my wife and I stopped silencing our child’s spirit.

The moment we allowed my daughter to be who she is, to grow her hair, to wear the clothes she wanted to wear, she was a different child. And I mean it was immediate. It was a total transformation.

I now have a confident, a smiling, a happy daughter. She plays on girls’ volleyball teams. She has friendships. She’s a kid.

I came here today as a parent to share my story. I need you to understand that this language, if it becomes law, will have real effects on real people.

It will affect my daughter. It will mean that she cannot play on the girls’ volleyball team, or dance squad, or tennis team.

I ask you, please don’t take that away from my daughter or the countless others like her who are out there. Let them have their childhoods, let them be who they are. I ask you to vote against this legislation.
