I'm still relatively new to martial arts. Only on my second belt in tae kwon do, but I'm finding myself to be very different from most of the other students. I don't have any desire to practice self defense moves with others using all my energy and effort (potentially hurting myself and them in the process), nor do I feel like I want to feel like a brick wall. I'm much more into the energy and mental focus I am get from training. Is this odd?
Maybe uncommon but not odd. I feel very much like you, personally! I do not enjoy practicing self-defense outside of a dedicated self-defense class. (It’s heavy. It’s not fun for me to imagine myself being assaulted. I don’t want it sprung on me without warning or permission. I do expect there to be self-defense in hapkido, but I don’t like it when it’s the main focus.)
We are all here for different reasons, and in my experience it is better when a school allows for and encourages that. I don’t know your gender identity, but girls and women are under unique and problematic pressure when it comes to self-defense and ‘confidence’. I wouldn’t blame someone for not being cool with that.
The way I deal with pursuing my own path is to remind myself that my way of expressing this art is important and valid.
A mentor once told me: “I should be able to know who you are by the way you do hapkido.” That blew my mind and almost have me permission to be myself.
Be yourself. I can totally relate to this.
