congrats, you successfully pissed me off, the thing you were apparently trying to do. do you ever get tired of doing conservative’s work for them?
Measuring the charity work that religious institutions do is their first line of defense. I’m speaking from an American perspective of course—but Republicans are constantly trying to defund public welfare programs in order to drive people into the churches’ arms. Because then you can kick trans people out of your shelter (Salvation Army), refuse to cover birth control (the Catholic college my friends attended), require people to pray before they eat (soup kitchen I volunteered at), prevent gay people from adopting kids and setting up a pipeline to take children from Korea to raise them in a Christian home (Christian adoption agencies). I could go on! The good work that churches do is fundamentally evangelical even if it isn’t capital-E Evangelical. It ought to be systemically replaced by publicly administrated, tax funded programs that feed, house, clothe, and support all people regardless of their religion.
If at that point you still want to engage with religion for the religion’s own sake, by all means go ahead. That’s none of my business. However, the good work that religious institutions do is a problem, not something to be desired.
Disclaimer: I am speaking to US politics because that is my area of expertise. The harm that religions do is obviously not limited to the U.S. but I leave that for others to address.
its probably a normal sign for the economy that all of my adulthood fantasies are like "imagine having your own kitchen living room and bathroom to decorate" "what if i could get on a train" "maybe one day i could purchase a sturdy pair of shoes" "i should save and invest in a single bicycle"
for every incel white man star wars dudebro there is a teenage lesbian with a slightly deeper and more obscure knowledge of star wars who will one day defeat him in battle
"queer-owned business" means nothing anymore. OpenAI and Palantir are both queer-owned businesses.
if this is how you find out that both sam altman and peter thiel are gay im sorry

You cannot be following me if you got a hogwarts house in your bio. Get a fucking grip.
Being raised atheist fucking slaps btw. The one good decision my parents made. I love having free time on Sundays. I love not believing insane shit.
continually astounded to learn that someone around me is actually for real christian. like. aren't you supposed to grow out of that
this post crossed my dash again so id like to clarify a few things:
1. stop telling me you're one of the good christians! or how your relationship to your faith is complicated! I AM MOCKING YOU! i am not taking a moral high ground here! this post is not about your religion's rampant homophobia, or child abuse, or the countless other fucking evils this post is about how YOU ARE FUCKING LAME. your faith is corny and passè and the things you do for it are fucking cringe. shut up!
2. do not come onto this post with some variation of "oh if they ACTUALLY read the bible they'd all be niceys" - first of all as previously stated this post is not about whether or not they're niceys, second of all the book probably doesnt even say that you just read a fucking tumblr post and finally WHO CARESSSSSS WHAT THE FUCKING BOOK SAYS?! THE BOOK IS MADE UP. ITS LAME. SHUT UP.
3. this post was prompted by a guy whose pronouns on discord were set to sinner/saved. that was in the tags of the original post but i want everyone to know this is the type of guy i have to work with

The thing that I find most annoying about signs in store windows advertising that they're welcoming to LGBT or that they accept everybody is that I really just assume that anyway. The sign is literally just a virtue signal and it's not there for any other reason, because every store is supposed to be open to the public by default. I would think it goes without saying you're not going to turn away a black person or someone wearing religious garb or a gay couple that walked in holding hands. If you did, word would get out immediately and you'd be in trouble. The signs are really a turn-off tbh because they're just so dumb.
It's like a restaurant putting up a "My cooks won't spit in your food!" sign.
If I was walking past a store with a sign that said "immigrants welcome!" my first thought would be "what did they do to suggest that they weren't welcome?", because why would you need to specifically tell members of a specific group they can walk in and buy things, that they can do what you want as many people as possible to be doing because that's how stores work, unless there was some reason for them to think they couldn't or shouldn't? That's the vibe it gives off.
The only sign of this type that’s actually telling people any new information are the “we speak [non-English] language] come on in” in the non-English language. There’s some auto shops in my area that list three or four languages, and obviously a shop advertising some ethnic treat or shampoo or whatever in a non English language says “immigrants we got the stuff you missed from home”. Like, that’s the real, non virtue signaling way for a store to communicate “immigrants welcome”.
That said, I have seen gay flags on shop doors where it really did mean something; gun shops aren’t default assumed to be gay friendly, and it’s not a zero cost move to openly announce a gun shop is gay friendly.
Sometimes it’s a “we don’t spit in your food” sign and sometimes it’s a “we are nut-free” sign, you know? It’s contextual.
this is huge actually
I used to think like this, but then Lauri Carleton was murdered. It's actually extremely brave to announce your support for a marginalized group in an era of increasing hate crimes and gun violence.
Lauri Carleton was shot and killed in August 2023 following a dispute over a Pride flag outside her Lake Arrowhead shop.
As a lesbian myself I hard agree with prev:
#as a gay person i actually like seeing pride flags on businesses bc i know that if i go in there with my girlfriend#im not going to get bizarre attitude or hostility from the people who work there#which is not necessarily a given! some people will take your money while treating you horribly and its bad!
Being able to see these as purely "virtue signaling" means you've had the privilege to only live in places where support is assumed, which is not everywhere. In more hostile environments, it's very heartening to see that if you are in a group that can't be sure of that. And as this article shows, it's not like people who put those signs up are not assuming risk!
I'm so tired of this very insular Tumblr attitude that is so disdainful of allyship, assuming it must always be performative and fake - when allies have often been a (sometimes quite literal) lifeline for marginalized groups throughout history. It shows how much people who say these things live in a bubble, at a complete removal from anyone who has lived lives unlike their own, presently or currently. Go to a small town in a red state, you sheltered children. Or at least just like, leave the Internet once in a while, since I'm sure that is the real issue with a lot of people who make these posts.

I live in one of the bluest areas in the US and these kind of signs are still absolutely necessary. Because the assholes are all around like fungal spores and it can be the difference between them shutting up and fucking off or taking root and becoming regulars and inviting all their asshole friends.
Yeah as a trans lesbian living in Sask its relieving when places have that up, because its kinda the norm to not be treated well. Places doing that place themselves at risk to an extent. My uni regularly had nazi vandalization of our pride walk, theres a pretty famous video of a guy harassing volunteers who were painting the pride walk on broadway a few years back, and Ive heard of other instances around town. It has risk attached. It also makes me comfortable going places with my girlfriend, it makes me know staffs probably not going to harass us or stand by when I get called slurs in front of them(has happened many times usually when Im alone) or some weird transphobe in Harry Potter merch stalks me through a store(happened twice, the second time security of their own accors stopped the stalker just from how weird they were being following me). Its super helpful when medical places show it because discrimination is common, thankfully the pharmacy my gf and I go to has a really supportive staff, they display and wear pride flags and then back it up with how they support trans people going there for HRT. Sure a flag can be performative but not here, not when you can get harassed for it, not when its relatively uncommon. This reminds me of the people who whine about pronoun circles and other things and it tells me they've never lived somewhere thats norm isnt being queer supportive.
“city that traditionally decorates their doors with garlic found to have no vampire problems, therefore hanging garlic is useless vanity” is a hell of a take in the vampire states of america
took (1) look at the notes and yeah these signs are absolutely necessary.
Fucking wild take from OP in a world where the nationwide legality of gay marriage is expressly back on the table according to at least one of the jackasses on the Supreme Court.
Like, genuinely, what fucking world do you live in? Because it ain't the same as mine, and I live in fucking Portland, Oregon.
Anyway, y'all keep putting that garlic up on your doors until we're no longer the vampire states.

MAKE ME CHOOSE
@quinnigallagherjones asked: Road 96 or Firewatch? Promise me something. Don't make the same mistakes I did, okay?
Road 96 07/??
It's actually so cringe that in English mount Everest is named after some rando geographer who was against this naming and it passed only because the British were too fucking racist to be concerned with local names or pronunciations.
Can relate
