Grian slept fitfully. His dreams were odd, starting off normal and slowly deteriorating. He found himself on a beach with a map in his hands. That much was normal, routine. What was strange was the level of alarm that filtered through him once his consciousness realized Scar was not at his side.

And then, there was the song.

Faintly, Grian heard someone singing. It was a haunting sound, slow and looping. There were words, but the language in which they were spoken was garbled, lost in the melody. For some reason, he felt as though it wasn’t meant for his ears. He felt like it had picked someone else.

This wasn’t the blurry shadow of what may or may not be a rock, or the light of the moon against a wave imitating a town. This was a genuine miracle. This was his relief.

(If only someone had bothered to tell Scar, the sea witch in question, about this divergence).

“I think the others are napping on deck.” At least Scar saw them all huddling together in a corner as he walked back to his sleeping chamber. It was warm out, after all, and soaking in a bit of sunlight could do some good.

Scar looks at him, something angry and hurt in his gaze, “But I think you’ll make a good first message to the masses. You were the first to take advantage of me, after all.”
