joanna was born in the middle of nowhere, usa, also known as the ozarks in rural missouri.

her father went into the army straight out of high school, then went back to school for business. her mother inherited the family restaurant on the coast of the lake of the ozarks, which was always hustling and bustling during the tourist season.

she has a “kid” sister who’s only a few years younger than her. she took the family business.

overall, her family was well-enough off, never really struggling to make ends meet despite not much business in the off-season.

she enjoyed her childhood. always on the lake with her father on the weekends, working around the restaurant even as a kid, sitting in her mom’s huge rolly chair in the office when she would go to work with her.

her parents were convinced that joanna would take on more responsibility at the restaurant once she was out of high school, and eventually move to take it over once her parents decided to retire.

to her parents’ surprise, she opted to go off to college far away from home. the decision had actually been building up over time. she had never even been outside of missouri. she’d only been to big cities like st. louis and kansas city a few times. she decided to go to a school right outside of washington dc, and was able to attend on a hefty scholarship and government grants.

she studied international relations and russian, and applied for and got an internship at the CIA. she worked for them when she got out of college too.

she became an operations officer and worked closely with the disguise department. she was told she had “that face” that could be manipulated to become someone else almost effortlessly. she worked missions around the world, mostly in russia, for years.

after a failed mission, she was put on desk duty back in dc. this made her super frustrated, and she decided to look into different places of work. she had heard whispers of a mercy division and started looking up more information.

she decided to look into the mercy division more and believed it to be a good fit for her.
