“What? It was an honest-to-god question.” He paused, taking a step back. “Always figured you hung around me because you needed someone to vent your frustrations on, which is fine by me.”

“Don’t be stupid.” She felt a sudden burst of anxiety and unsure of how to properly...express herself, Tessa instead settled her gaze on the ground, blue-green eyes focussing in on the toe of her boot.

“I got a couple o’ people I wanna reacquaint with.” 

He gave her a shrug, not caring at all about her unease. The mission was still first priority.

“You think you can sit here and not punch anyone that comes up to ya for a few minutes while I find a couple o’ nurses?”

“Depends, think you can get one of those nurses to slip me a vicodin?” There was an annoyingly persistent burning spreading from her abdomen, the simple effort of sitting still was too much, even.

“He sounds like even more of an asshole than I am.” Jack’s lips twitched, his smile growing oddly fond as she talked more about herself.

“So you just grew up beating the shit outta boys?”

“Ugh, trust me, sometimes he really is. He’s probably the one I get along with the least.” She would still hurt anyone that hurt him of course, but family affairs were hardly ever calm with both of them in the same room.
