what happened in the finale?
I'm on mobile so I can't do read more but I will tag accordingly.
Long story short, Webby (and by defacto, May and June) is Scrooge's daughter. Bradford made her for the sole purpose of defeating him, because Scrooge had no heirs. It's really fucked up—and also just invalidates all the found family she built with the boys (family tree wise, she'd be, like, their cousin) and her relationship with Beakley as her grandma. The cherry on the cake is she calls him Dad at the end and it's a complete wrench in the gears.
Aside from that? The finale was good. It was getting there.
And then, it went to hell.
They could have given Webby a completely different backstory than that.
ducktales really hates the concept of found family, huh?
webby, who had found a family with the mcducks for years, turns out to secretly be blood related the whole time, ruining the entire purpose of her arc. boyd is living with gyro, the closes thing to a blood father he has, instead of his adoptive parents, despite gyro being horrible to him for something he couldn’t control. even lena, who does get to stay with her adoptive family, was forced to go back to magica after she’d cut her out of her life.Â
this show may want to have a message about choosing your own family, but the one it sends is loud, clear, and ugly: in the end, you’ll never be able to sever the ties you have with your “blood” family, and in the end, they are the only thing that matters.
I’ve got to say I’m not a big fan of the whole Webby-is-April theory, for a couple of reasons:
- Webby being revealed as “not Beakley’s biological grandkid” would be kind of a gut-punch in a show where biological family isn’t the only kind of family you can have. Wether or not they’re biologically related, Beakley is still Webby’s grandmother. - Webby doesn’t need a new/”real” family! She already has the McDucks, the triplets are her brothers and that’s that. - Lena and Violet are just as much Webby’s friends as her family is, and I worry they’d get pushed to the side now that Webby has a new “girl trio” to be a part of. AMJ could’ve worked so well as new additions to Team Magic, but they didn’t need to make Webby April to make it happen.
Yo I bet Isabella Finch is Bradford’s grandmother!

The more context we get the funnier this image becomes to me bc like
Look at Bradford in the background.
We went from zero context to "the face you make when your boss' spy friend that's also the enemy of your secret organization is flirting with what looks like the grim reaper" to "tfw YOUR BOSS, who's also your enemy and keeps trying to destroy your secret evil organization, is flirting with what looks like the grim reaper"
So we all agree Isabella Finch is totally Bradford’s grandma that Ludwig mentioned, right?Â
- The Lost Library from the comics is an ancient Woodchuck mystery, and was originally connected to the JWG. - Isabella Finch founded the JWG and was a great adventurer who might have known Ludwig himself back in the day. - Bradford is extremely against adventuring, and pinpoints the missing mysteries of Finch to try and achieve his goals. - More importantly, he’s got access to the Lost Library itself, which is a well-kept secret of his. - We know from Frank’s tumblr that Bradford’s motivations against Scrooge and his family run deep, and that the flashbacks we’ve seen so far are only a hint to his backstory. Scrooge’s idol and the reason he started adventuring himself? None other than Isabella Finch. - Bradford might’ve been left the Lost Library by Finch for some reason - it might’ve been a secret of hers, which is why even Huey, our Junior Woodchucks expert, never mentions it.
I’m going to add this part on to the post because this is actually a really great point - Scrooge losing Della and Bradford supposedly losing Isabella would be a great parallel, and in addition, we know that Bradford himself was behind at least a part of Della’s disappearance.
It would be all too sweet of a revenge plan for Bradford to ensure Scrooge would lose one of his closest relatives to adventuring when she did something quick and reckless. A very “I’ll show you what it’s like, then maybe you’ll see things how I do” type of plan that I can only imagine he’s used on Gandra and possibly Heron too via sending them to the Lost Library. (After all, the latter changed a lot after she too acted recklessly on an adventure, and we know Bradford’s got a nasty control complex).
So we all agree Isabella Finch is totally Bradford’s grandma that Ludwig mentioned, right?Â

guardians of the lost library! (1993) // the challenge of the senior junior woodchucks! (2020)
it kinda bugs me seeing people say the drakes are boyd’s “found family” because… they’re not really? boyd didn’t have a say in any of it, louie just reprogrammed him as a way to get back at doofus. and doofus’ parents welcomed boyd bc they saw him as a reason to not let doofus walk all over them anymore. i absolutely hate the idea of boyd continuing to stay with them bc boyd is a child and it’s not his job to fix a messed up family that he was thrust into. doofus’ parents need to learn how to actually parent the child they already have, and a second child should not be thrown into the mix. especially since doofus is so resentful of boyd.
and like. gyro is far from perfect, and he’s got a lot of work to do on himself. his trauma is a reason why he treated boyd so badly for most of the episode, but it’s not an excuse. however, the fact that he put himself between boyd and fenton with no true guarantee that boyd wouldn’t kill him shows that his compassion for boyd isn’t conditional. he’s realized he was in the wrong, and he’s gonna put in the work to make things right.
i have to respectfully disagree with this interpretation, since i am aware i’m the one spearheading that boyd should stay with the drakes.
while, yes, boyd was not given a choice in the matter, he is a child. this wasn’t mr and mrs drake forcing boyd to live with them, or even using him as an escape from doofus - yes, they do feel more empowered with boyd around, but they’re clearly willing to stick up for boyd against doofus, too. it’s not solely boyd putting in all the effort for them, it’s a two-way street - boyd gives them a chance to be normal parents with a normal life, and they protect boyd from doofus and give him a loving, welcoming home. the drakes are learning to parent the child they actually have, too - we see them ground doofus during happy birthday doofus drake and tell him that the way he acts is no way to act towards his brother. they’re certainly not perfect people, but they’re a step up from gyro.
and it’s not like the drakes are neglecting boyd, either. they clearly want to keep him safe and support him - boyd points out that mrs drake would be upset with and scold doofus for acting out of line in his memories, and they stick by boyd during both moonvasion and the challenge of the senior junoir woodchucks. they’re clearly willing to put in the effort it takes to be better parents for boyd, and boyd is happy with them, too.Â
also, i cannot stress this enough, but trauma should NEVER be an excuse to yell at, use the wrong pronouns for (which gave me, personally, extremely misgendery vibes), and threaten to shut down / kill a child. point blank. it doesn’t matter what the reason is, if an adult tells a child to their face that they have no qualms about killing them for something they can’t control (and gyro KNOWS boyd can’t control it), that’s ultimately the worse act then being parents who are still learning but are showing active growth. gyro knew that lil bulb and his other robots were just misunderstood, and after 20 years of saying that, he should have known better than to not use the same mindset for boyd.
edit: while rewatching the episode to fact-check, i also noticed that gyro is being framed and is acting similarly to another character in the show - magica de spell. both of them refer to their “children” as “it”, dehumanize them and call them monsters, and are even framed similarly (see: gyro reaching out to boyd when he refers to shutting him down for good compared to magica reaching out to kill webby with her magic). gyro is not only being horrible to boyd, but he’s also being compared to a character who’s canonically a child abuser.
last post i’ll make about this, but the crew of ducktales constantly shutting down people who were saying gyro was a jerk after this episode really rubbed me the wrong way.
people are still allowed to dislike gyro. people are still allowed to think he’s a jerk and like him despite that! no matter what reasons gyro has for doing the things he did, at the end of the day, he still did them. he still called fenton stupid and sub-human at every turn, still acted passive-aggressively towards him, still tried to enslave an entire race living in scrooge’s house, still dehumanized a child and used the wrong name and pronouns for him, and still tried to make evil robot uprisings day in and day out intentionally (project gyrobot apocalypse, anyone?) no matter what akita did, those were still all things gyro chose to do. he had 20 years to stop and take a look at himself, 20 years in a much kinder environment, and he didn’t. gyro can still be considered a jerk, whether or not you like him. trauma doesn’t change that.
while i like gyro as much as the next person i think we should all take a step back and realize how bad he was to boyd for the majority of this episode. sure he accepted boyd in the end but not only did he constantly call boyd by his old Robot name and call him and It but he also fully planned on killing him. right in front of huey. the only character in the entire episode who was adamant about boyd being his friend
gyro doesnt deserve to have immediate redemptional love thrown his way, Especially when when everyone was oh so mad at della when she grounded her child after he nearly got their entire family killed. did either of them go about the situation completely well? absolutely not! della is a new parent to a chorus of 11 year olds, of Course she didnt know how to ground him properly! and gyro was working from a flawed standpoint. but theres no excuse as to why gyro gets love love from everyone while people still vehemently hate della for something shes already apologized for and realized was wrong
the double standard in this house is way too loud
i think one of the biggest problems i have with people trying to justify how gyro treated boyd is that being abused doesn’t excuse or justify being abusive. mr and mrs drake have the same amount of trauma that gyro does - they’ve lived with doofus for at least 10 years or more, and clearly have some issues that have arisen due to that. however, they don’t let that make them cruel to boyd, and even stand up to doofus to make sure boyd is safe in their family. they never call boyd an “it”, they never dehumanize him, and they don’t let their past expiriences with a terrifying child make them treat boyd harshly. no matter if gyro apologized or not (which he didn’t), the wounds for boyd and fenton both have already been made.Â

in the light of the new episode, please don’t erase boyd’s found family in favor of his “real”/birth family! yes doofus is a horrible child but mr and mrs drake genuinely did love, care for, and want to support boyd (even knowing he was potentially dangerous) and the trope of treating someone’s found family as “lesser” than their birth family is a really harmful one.
“but the drakes didnt KNOW boyd was dangerous! they would’ve acted the same as gyro if they knew!”
not only did they know, but boyd went “dangerous” on them and they still accepted him as their son without a second’s thought. and they love him, too!
they gave him the hugs he wanted,
and they even supported boyd at his junior woodchuck ceremonies! the drakes love boyd unconditionally even while knowing he was “dangerous”, and gyro has no excuse to treat him cruelly.
I was thinking about the two “Huey makes a friend with similar interests” episodes and found a neat connection between the two. In both episode the new friend saves Huey from falling. Violet saves him from falling into the volcano (twice) and Boyd saves Huey when he falls of the tower. It might just be a coincidence, but it feels like it fits Huey’s arc this season.
I am 99.9% sure that Huey’s enemy is going to be himself, with him focusing too hard on the rules/the truth defined by his own knowledge and that is gonna put him in dangerous situations that he won’t be able to get out of alone. That’s when the people who care about him will help him out and prove that there are people he can still trust.
