Game Plan [Scott]
Scott felt the life leave Josephâs body like a punch to the gut, still, they werenât just people, they were them, and there had to be something, something else -
"No," he mumbled. "This isnât⊠this wasnât supposed to happen."
None of them were supposed to die. Scott felt sick. This could have been Allison. He was pretty sure Joseph had a girlfriend, a short blonde who worked in R&D. âPreparedâ could mean any number of things, but chances were slim there would be a holy cleric or resurrection machine waiting for them at the emergency clinic. Scott reached for Allisonâs hand, still cradling Joseph in his opposite arm, because he needed to touch something alive. âThey killed him.â
"Scott-" That was Allison. Â That was Lois. They weren't friends, not as far as Allison knew, not in any way that counted. Mostly everyone she worked with was on a first name basis with her, but that was her preference as a team leader, and she thought Scott was the same. Lois' grip was tight on the steering wheel, and she looked so lost.
Allison wondered if that was what she looked like. She wasn't supposed to have that privilege.
People didn't die on missions with Scott McCall. That didn't happen. That was foolish and naive to think, but - that didn't happen. For a moment, Allison didn't know what to do. When she reached out, there was nothing for her mind to latch unto.
"Let him go." She ordered, softer than she intended, but more stern. It wasn't the first time she lost someone in the field. It wouldn't be the last. "Put him down, Scott, move him away from you."
