Remember || Martinez & Faye
"Only my life," she said drowsily, pulling the bag up around her and propping her head on her arm. A tiny smile turned the corner of her mouth at his use of her name. She could count on one hand the number of times he’d said it in the last few weeks.
"Like you’re not stubborn," she said as he turned away to keep watch. Faye settle as best she could on the hard ground. There was always a stick or a rock lodged in her back when she woke up. God, what she wouldn’t give for one night in a real bed, or even just not on the ground. She’d take a dirty floor over cold Georgia clay any day. They’d have to move soon. They were low on ammo, food, and only luck had kept them from being discovered on more than one occasion, well-hidden though their little camp may be.
Danger was always a stones throw away.
A rustle made her eyes open. She lay still as a stone, hearing Martinez’ voice from above. “‘S not me,” she whispered as loud as she dared, letting him know she hadn’t moved. Her hand closed slowly over the revolver that never left her side.
The sound of Faye's voice down near the sleeping bags sent a chill down Martinez's spine. If she was still there -- he turned sharply out towards the blackness of the surrounding forest. He could feel his heart pounding in his ears as he waited to hear something else. It'd been months, maybe close to a year since the dead had begun walking the earth. In the daylight, in the open -- biters were manageable in small numbers. But out here like this, in the dark -- his hands tightened around his rifle.
Another rustle sounded out through the air followed by the snapping of branches on the ground. It was closer this time. Closer, and too sharp to be coming from a biter. Another person maybe? This thought did nothing to ease his mind.
Glancing down towards Faye, Martinez whistled and nodded for her to join him atop the downed tree trunk. People could be just as bad if not worse than the dead. He'd learned this from experience. Knew this from his own past actions. After everything he'd done, all the innocent blood on his hands, perhaps he deserved whatever came to him, but not Faye.
"Show yourself, esse." He called quietly out ito the night.

She saw the look he gave her before the light of the fire was extinguished. The cold was instant, seeping into her bones like she was being immersed in freezing water. She shivered at both the sensation as well as the sudden darkness.
"Don’t call me ‘lady’," she said dryly, ignoring the verbal jab. "And I disagree; I think that’s one of the only things we’re entitled to anymore. Being a memory. Can only hope it’s a good one,” she smirked.
"Not tired…" she lied, trying to cover a yawn but failing. She took his hand and let him help her up. The campsite was small, made among a pile of fallen trees far enough off the road to avoid being seen by the dead, or the living for that matter. The last couple of weeks had been rough on the unlikely pair. Pulled together at first out of necessity, Faye found herself growing to like the man’s company. They hadn’t killed each other yet, and seemed to trust each other well enough. They each owed the other their lives several times over. That had to count for something.
"I can stay up with you…" she said as she fell heavily onto her sleeping bag, stifling another yawn.
Martinez smirked in the darkness at her response. "Fine, fine, have it your way, Senora." It was only her dislike of being addressed as lady that prompted him to continuing doing so. His smirk softened as he felt her hand grasp his to stand. One couldn't choose their company at the end of the world, but even so, he knew things could be worse. For all their disagreements, she was a strong woman - good with a gun with nerves of steel.
Checking the clip in his handgun, he watched as she settled down onto her sleeping bag. Weariness was almost tangible on her voice and he was skeptical of her offer to help. "You don't ow me anything, Faye," he said, re-securing the clip in place. They'd need to scrounge up ammunition before much longer. He rarely used her name, he realized. The syllable feeling foreign on his tongue. "Besides, I know you'll do what you want, anyway. Stubborn." This last word he muttered in Spanish, fighting to keep the smile from his lips.
Turning away from the secluded corner where their sleeping bags were nearly invisible from the surrounding area, he hoisted himself atop a pile of fallen limbs. From there, he knew he could see a good distant in the daytime. The vantage point served little purpose in the darkness aside from perpetuating the feeling of keeping watch. Lighting a stale cigarette, he felt his mind begin to wonder. It'd been nearly a week since they'd happened upon this location, each of them avoiding the question of what came next. No place was permanent nowadays, it seemed.
A rustle from below pulled him from his thoughts. "Should bring a blanket if you're gonna join me -- breeze is chilly tonight."

"I want you to remember me after I’m dead."
Martinez looked up over what was left of the camp fire. Through the darkness, he thought he could make out the lines of the woman's face, but it very well may have been his imagination. After three weeks on the road, her face was ingrained in his mind as a reminder that he was still alive.
He contemplated her words, before rising to his feet and kicking dirt over the dying embers. "That's what everyone wants, lady. Not sure it's a privilege we are entitled to anymore." His voice sounded sharper to his ears than he intended, but he wasn't about to have this conversation here. Not now. Instead, he lent down and offered her his hand. "Come on. You need your sleep. I'll take first watch."

'You're not going to die. Don't say that.'
Martinez smirked across the weathered sheet of ply wood that had been serving as the RV camp's table and tipped the rim of the amber bottle into his mouth. The beer was warm, but it was still more refreshing than the run off from the plastic tarps they had set up to collect rain water. The look on the young blonde girl's face egged him onward. Setting the bottle down, he dropped all four legs of his chair to the ground and clutched at his heart. "Oh, senorita, it's only a matter of time... one of these days I'll just drift off in my sleep. Maybe choke on my dentures. Being such an OLD man, as I am." Ever since she'd alluded to his age, he'd taken to religiously teasing her.

Starters
'Listen to me. I told you my life ended the day you were born, the truth is, it didn't start until then.'
'If you die, we all die.'
'Kill them before they kill us.'
'You got it all wrong. I don't want you to say anything. I want you to feel what I felt. Then ... then I want you to die'
'When you die, can I have your shoes?'
'Well, if we weren't at war already, we sure as hell are now.'
'I need you. We all need you. None of us would have survived this place if it weren't for you.'
'You're the most beautiful broom in a broom closet of brooms.'
'I love you. I want you to know that since we're all going to die soon.'
'It's not easy being in charge, is it?'
'Who we are and who we need to be to survive are two very different things.'
'Well, if he didn't hate us before, he does now.'
'My life ended the day that you were born.'
'You don't understand. I'm trying to save all of us.'
'This is on you, princess. You should have kept your mouth shut.'
'We're not alone.'
'You have to warn them.'
'Before you get any ideas, I don't care.'
'You don't like being called "princess," do you, Princess?'
'We're here now. Everything's going to be okay.'
'I swear to God, the more we learn about this place the less we know.'
'What my people are doing to yours is wrong.'
'Need a hand now that you almost blew one off?'
'I want you to remember me after I'm dead.'
'You're not going to die. Don't say that.'
'My brother's been keeping me away. He's a total dick which you probably figured out.'
'So proud of you. Your father would be so proud of you too.'
'Look. This is not who we are.'
'I can't let any of you get hurt any more. Not after what I did.'
At Every End, A Beginning || Martinez and Gareth
This was the last time that Albert would be put on watch. Guests had entered the main courtyard without warning, and no one was there to greet them. No one but Gareth that was. He’d been watering the planters near the entry to the dorms when he’d heard the voice ring out. He set down the watering can and stepped out into the main courtyard.
He offered the usual welcome, along with his name. Two were usually such an easy group to deal with. Two rarely warranted the rail cars. Assuming of course that they didn’t pose a threat. Gareth heard the shuffle of a sniper on the roof and felt better about things. He had back up at least. Then he felt Alex by his side and he relaxed a little more. “We ask that you set down all your weapons, and let Alex here do a quick check, then we’ll get you situated with a place to put your things and some food.
He watched as Alex cautiously approached the man and woman. “You understand, this is merely procedure. We don’t know you, you don’t know us, what we do is for our mutual protection. Do you have any questions?”
The man that approached them, Gareth he’d said his name was, made Martinez uncomfortable. There was something about this man — perhaps his confidence or the fact that he talked so freely — that made his skin prickle. He fought the urge to tighten his grip on the butt of the the rifle, and instead, glanced back at Lilly. Her face was drawn and pale, and her frame was thin. The road and her grief had not treated them well. They needed this place.
Swallowing roughly, Martinez turned back to Gareth. He didn’t yet lower his gun. He would, for Lilly, he knew, but not just yet. “I’m Martinez. And she’s Lilly. We’ve been on the road for weeks now. Just the two of us.” While he spoke, he scanned their surroundings taking note of the brick building, the garden, what looked to be empty rail cars in the distance, the silhouette of a sniper on the roof. Almost immediately, Martinez’ posture shifted. “I’ll lower my gun, but I’m not going to set it down. Not with your amigo up their lining us up in his sites. Like you said. We don’t know you. And you don’t know us.”
Officially sat through and completed my north American veterinary licensing examination. Translation: self imposed internet hiatus is over.
