BRU PLZ STOP TAGGING Y'ALL FICS WRONG, I DON'T WANT TO READ A OC X WHOEVER,
I WANT MY F*CKING X READER
hot take : 18yo book alicent had no parental obligation towards rhaenyra. the fact that she didn't care about her and only loved her own children doesn't make her a villain.
“Princess Elia was a good woman, Your Grace. She was kind and clever, with a gentle heart and a sweet wit”.
my princess never did anything wrong, genuinely one of the sweetest asoiaf characters and deserved the entire world george martin i am outside your door
elia : literally just exists
the antis:
there was never any hope for Rhaenyra to have a good relationship with the green kids regardless of what Alicent did because the green kids lived with Viserys and saw and felt the favouritism of Rhaenyra which was always bound to bleed resentment, more importantly Rhaenyra knew and never did anything about it she liked that her father blatantly loved her more over his other children, the only way she felt like she was enough for him was if he was choosing her over his other kids. the “thank you father” on Driftmark was her rubbing it in Alicent and her siblings faces that Viserys would always choose her.

The TEA is scorching!!!!!!
I mean, season 1 was equally bad, only it had some good moments and that made everyone forget everything. Season 1 was racist when the murder of a Black man by a white man to “protect a white woman's honor” is brushed aside and seen as some sort of “girlboss, gaslight, gatekeep” moment. Season 1 was racist when a Black woman was neglected as some rebound for a white woman and her grooming and neglect are brushed aside, instead her tragic, painful death is shown as some sort of dragonrider's death when it just reflects how much Black female patients irl suffer in healthcare, particularly during and due to childbirth. Season 1 was racist when the white qween usurped two Black motherless girls' of their rightful inheritance and made them docile enough to worship their white usurpers and even get engaged to one of their usurpers. Season 1 is misogynistic when Alicent is humiliated from an unnecessary sexual assault scene with Larys that is also extremely ableist due to the implication that disabled people are manipulative, opportunistic, murderous, and sexually deviant. Season 1 is misogynistic when a woman is brutally murdered by her estranged husband and it is seen as “romantic” instead, and a teenage girl being groomed and later abandoned in a brothel without any protection is just “classic misunderstanding”. Season 1 is misogynistic when another teenage girl is groomed by her father and her king, and yet her sexual assault scene is not seen for what it is, marital rape and statutory rape, and instead laughed at or she is blamed for seducing the powerful adult King. Season 1 is misandrist when a commoner-born man of color, who is regularly subjected to fantasy racism and classicism, is sexually assaulted by his white female employer and his rightful anger at being used and tossed over is called incel behavior without taking into account his trauma and the danger he faced if his secrets are exposed.
So, yeah, House of the Dragon has been all that and more since the beginning. It's only because season one didn't ridiculously strayed from the source material's big events that not many viewers noticed, unless they watched the show multiple times and/or from a critical lens.
Currently reading fire & blood and i'm really wondering what exactly Alicent has done to even be called an "evil stepmother" in the first place? She is literally the average rich traditional Westerosi noblewoman. The worst things she has done are just calling rhaenyra a whore (which should be noted was said by Mushroom who was not even present at that time) and calling rhaenyra's sons bastards (which, well, is true) 😭
Book!Alicent's crimes:
- wanting her own blood on the throne (which she herself did not admit, but viserys said that when she proposed that rhaenyra & aegon I should be married)
- occasional snark about the blacks
beautiful tags by @gojuo
It's so funny to see Rhaenyra's fans saying and stamping that she is the heir to the throne, even though Viserys himself only named her out of guilt for what he did to Aemma, and on Aegon's name day he himself wondered if it was the right choice, Viserys himself, as much of an idiot as he was, noticed that it wasn't a good idea, do you really think, that if Viserys hadn't appointed her out of guilt he would have appointed her because she was the best choice, he probably would have either named Aegon, Aemond or even Daeron
I'm about to say something that is going to get me a lot of hate
Just because criston hates rhaenyra doesn't make him a woman hater it makes him a man with morals 😗
let's talk about how in the books Rhaenyra was HATED by her descendants?, Rhaenyra by her descendants and by the people was labeled as a traitor, usurper and Maegor with breasts, she was ABOMINED by her own lineage, she was taken from her short reign by her own subjects, in addition to never being considered a legitimate queen, no female Targaryen descendant of hers bears the name Rhaenyra because it is considered an insult, because even in her short reign, she was a terrible queen, and to this day, the ideals of the green team, which was to never have a woman in power on the iron throne, it's one thing if fans don't like a character, but her own descendants and subjects not liking her at all is not a sign that she wasn't a good person?

"Rhaenyra won in the end because the modern day targs descend from her"
I keep seeing this and i roll my eyes everytime, because thats not a win. She only sat the throne for 6 months before the smallfolk got sick of her shit and ran her out of the kingdom.
Her son only sat the throne because every other male Targaryen was dead, he was the only one left. The poor child was traumatized by the events he witnessed, including the death of his mother. After him the targaryen dynasty got increasingly self destructive to the point where modern day Targaryen's are facing extinction.
To add insult to injury:
-Rhaenyra was never formally recognized as queen. Her son's, grandsons and descendants there after do not count her in the line of rulers, it goes viserys I, Aegon II, Aegon III and so on.
-She is not remembered fondly in history either, in fact she is branded a traitor to the realm and a usurper. The nickname "maegor with teats" is used as a swearing in modern day game of thrones.
-The female targaryen descendants were never named rhaenyra either, why? because her descendants considered her name to be a curse. Not a single one had a kind word to say regarding her, this includes her son who witnessed her death.
-The green's ideology won out in the end too, because after the dance of dragons she is used as a prime example of why women should not hold the throne over men.
Truth is, there was no real winner of the war at all, the bloodline continuing through her means nothing when those descendants spit on her name.
I honestly don't understand people demanding that Alicent comfort her children, Alicent lost her new mother, and Otto probably never comforted her, she doesn't know how to deal with these things because amazingly, she never had support, she never had anyone to give her advice, to comfort her or someone to wipe her tears, she was a new mother, tell me where you learn to be a mother or to comfort someone if you never had someone to teach you, Alicent deals with her own problems, she was pushed by her own father, who was supposed to protect her, to marry a pedophile, who never treated her as she deserved, so stop demanding something from her that she never knew what it was like
Now we know why Nettles has been cut, can’t show the “propaganda” of Rhaenyra being racist and vile towards a young girl out of pure jealousy, now we know why Laena was horribly treated as well because anything where Rhaenyra isn’t the “number 1 girl is propaganda”.
The way the series portrays the black team as if they were all good is pathetic, Rhaenyra is reckless, pathetic, a terrible queen, and amazingly, a terrible mother, she is such a bad queen that the people themselves took away her power from the throne, Daemon is pathetic, a spoiled mother's boy who doesn't care about his daughters and had sex with his niece less than a week after his wife's death, Jacaerys is nothing more than a poor guy with anger issues that I'm sure he wouldn't be a good king, Lucerys is another reckless person who doesn't know how to handle his responsibilities, Joffrey was completely useless in the series and books, Aegon and Viserys (sons of Rhaenyra and Daemon) are equally useless, Viserys died a pathetic death, and Aegon one of the worst Targaryen kings that ever existed was fired, Rhaenyra's lineage only brought disgrace and terrible kings to the iron throne, one or two get away with it, honestly, I can't wait to see the death of the entire black team
Want to hear something harsh?, here it is, Rhaenyra spent the entire series being a spoiled brat hiding behind her father, she did bad things but she didn't care, because at the end of the day, Viserys, being the idiot king he was, found a way to protect her, Rhaenyra may be the heir, but that doesn't make her worthy of the iron throne, her fans idolize her as if she had never done anything wrong, and in the books the commoners themselves remove her from the throne because they don't like her, the famous Maegor with breasts, she is nothing more than a spoiled woman with a God complex who thinks that just because she is albino and has a pet lizard with wings she can do anything she wants, she died late

Seeing young Alicent holding her babies will never not make me emotionally devastated. Because look at her.
She’s so small. So young. Her small frame is swallowed by her infant children. You can actually see how truly young she is in these moments. She’s just a child forced to be a mother. And she does it dutifully though she’s unprepared. Bouncing and holding her children to love and comfort them as best she can
And in these moments you can see how worn out she is. She’s tired and alone. Her eyes are sad and dull and she looks into nothing as if she’s dissociating and seeking comfort away from reality.
She’s a shadow of the girl she used to be. A girl who used to laugh and smile and dream. And it was all stripped away from her to satisfy men much older and powerful than her.
And despite it all. She loves her children. She protects them and fights for them. She’s just a child forced to have children and care for them alone. And it’s so sad because she deserved so much more. She deserved to be a girl for longer. To find love and peace and joy. And she deserved to find motherhood in her own time. But she didn’t.
And I’ll never get over it.
I have seen quite often that many people consider young Alicent to be too sensitive and just an envious/jealous girl. Well...
Daemon almost killed Alicent's brother at the tourney, (he was much younger than him). Gwayne was so badly wounded that even the maester had to personally visit Otto and warn him that his son will live.
Otto and Daemon's relationship has always been tense. Daemon allows himself to insult the memory of Otto's dead wife, in front of EVERYONE at the council.. And I remind you, mother's death is the same trauma for Alicent as for everyone's beloved Rhaenyra whom everyone loves to justify her behavior with the death of her mother. But no one talks about Alicent, even tho she also lost her mother. Alicent loved her very much and she still misses her, praying every day at the sept. Do you think she doesn't know what kind of relationship her father has with Daemon? She knows what a terrible person Daemon is, what frightening violence he is capable of, but she is silent and smiles because he is a prince, he is the brother of the king, and uncle of her best friend. She always has to be silent, polite and patient, just like her father.
Imagine what Alicent felt when she found out that Rhaenyra had slept with a man like Daemon? Betrayal. No, it's not just envy that her "friend" has privileges, it'sdisappointment. To make matters worse, Rhaenyra lied to Alicent, she SWEARS BY HER MOTHER'S GRAVE AND DEATH that she IS TELLING THE TRUTH. Mother. Little Alicent values her words, she values the memory of her mother, she is still grieving, and she believes Rhaenyra.
She even refuses to believe her own father, the closest and dearest person in her life. And for what? Eventually she becomes the reason why her father is kicked out of the Red Keep in disgrace, depriving the status of the king's right hand. She defended Rhaenyra's honor, she justified her, and was left absolutely alone again. No mother, no father.
She feels the bitterness and pain of loneliness in the court, and then this feeling doubles because what she did turns out to be a huge mistake. Her best friend is a liar. From Alicent's perspective, her best friend hooked up with a man who had been at enmity with her father all her life, almost killed her brother, and after Rhaenyra smiles at her as if nothing had happened, and shamelessly scatters words, the consequence of which is the departure of her father.
But yeah, for some stupid reason of course "she's just jealous girl" and nothing more.
