It was a rare opportunity to explore Arizona on foot because horses are not allowed on this trail or at this campground. Fortunately, one of my friends who is an avid hiker agreed to tag along. The Lockett Meadow campground is unhosted, rustic, and charming. It sits in a meadow of aspens with views of the San Francisco Peaks. The road to get to this trailhead and campground is a bit rugged and does not allow trailers. It is a one-way, rugged road that winds it’s way up to an elevation of 8600′. This is where the unique versatility of my truck camper comes in and allows me to explore off-road areas where others cannot venture.The Inner Basin trail is an 8 mile round-trip hike that goes from about 8500′ to 9,792′. You will be breathing heavy as you switchback your way through aspens to get to the top. Once at the top, the trailhead intersects with an old Jeep Road. If you continue to the right, you are about .4 of a mile away from a spectacular view of a meadow and the peak that is an ancient volcano.
