din  has  never  been  on  a  planet  this  peaceful.  

on  nevarro,  imperial  presence  lingers  still  :  bases  operate  with  a  skeleton  crew  of  the  empire’s  most  loyal  soldiers.  stormtroopers  still  wear  their  armor  despite  its  disrepair,  officers  still  wear  their  uniforms  and  titles  with  pride  as  though  either  retains  their  significance  after  the  empire’s  fall.  nevarro’s  surface  is  covered  in  ash  and  black  rock,  evidence  of  the  planet’s  devastating  volcanic  eruptions.  the  echo  of  destruction  rings  throughout  nevarro  even  now,  so  many  months  after  that  fateful  encounter  with  gideon  and  his  forces.  

sorgan  had  its  dangers,  despite  its  idyllic  appearance.  farmers  became  makeshift  soldiers,  given  training  and  time.  forested  farmland  became  a  battleground.  the  klatoonian  raiders  were  a  force  not  easily  dispatched,  especially  with  a  remnant  of  the  empire  at  their  disposal.  ultimately  it  was  not  the  empire  that  shattered  the  temporary  peace  sorgan  provided  —  it  was  the  hunters.  eyes  peer  through  a  scope,  tracking  fob  blinks  in  noiselessly  in  the  dense  woods.  if  they  stayed  on  sorgan,  those  eyes  would  always  find  them.  the  fob  would  always  blink  just  out  of  view.  

here,  standing  before  luke  skywalker’s  jedi  temple,  din  feels  that  grogu  is  closer  than  he’s  ever  been  to  a  peaceful  childhood.  

fields  of  green  roll  as  far  as  the  eye  can  see,  grass  stirred  only  by  children’s  feet  and  a  gentle  breeze.  the  buildings  look  as  though  they  were  formed  on  a  pottery  wheel,  rounded  &  grooved.  the  sky  is  pale  blue  and  cloudless,  the  sun  shines  bright  &  warm.  

grogu’s  peace  slips  away  with  the  setting  sun,  suffocated  in  the  darkness  that  falls  over  the  temple.  

he’s  been  having  nightmares? din  asks.  grass  is  pressed  flat  under  his  boots  with  every  step,  pace  brisk.  

no, luke  replies,  tone  even  &  calm.  he’s  been  having  visions. 

the  jedi  emerges  from  the  main  temple  with  grogu  in  his  arms  moments  later.  he  sets  the  child  down  carefully,  and  as  grogu  takes  a  few  teetering  steps  towards  the  mandalorian,  din  kneels  and  removes  his  helmet,  opening  his  arms  wide  to  receive  him.    “ i  promised  i’d  see  you  again. ” his  tone  is  soft,  voice  quiet  to  keep  from  breaking. “ i’m  here,  ad’ika. ”

grogu  knew  that  being  away  from  papa  din  would  be  hard .  he  really ,  truly  did  not  want  to  leave  him .  but  master  luke  was  right :  until  grogu  gained  control  of  his  force  abilities ,  he  would  never  be  truly  safe .  there  would   ALWAYS  be  imperial  forces  following  them ,  trying  to  take  him .

he  knows  he’s  safe  with  master  luke .  no  one  would  ever  DARE  take  on  the  jedi  master ,  not  even  moff  gideon .  but  knowing  his  safety  isn’t  in  question  doesn’t  keep  him  from  worrying  about  din .  he’s  strong ,  yes ,  but  what  if  the  empire  continued  following  him ?  what  about  all  the  people  that  wanted  his  papa  DEAD ?  he  could  never  shake  the  lingering  fears  of  what  could  happen  to  din  without  grogu  there  to  protect  him .  what  if  something  like  the  mudhorn  happened  again ?  even  if  it  wasn’t  as  complex  as  being  killed  by  the  empire  or  arrested  by  the  new  republic ,  he  could  die .  and  grogu  wouldn’t  be  there  to  protect  him . 

din’s  death  is  the  subject  of  many  nightmares  for  the  child .  actually ,  all  of  them .  there  hasn’t  been  a  night  in  WEEKS  where  he  doesn’t  wake  up  crying .  so  he  isn’t  all  that  surprised  to  hear  master  luke  called  the  mandalorian  to  visit .

when  the  child  sees  his  papa ,  he  can’t  contain  his  excitement .  his  RELIEF .  his  little  body  practically  VIBRATES  with  adrenaline  as  he  runs  towards  him .  when   he  gets  there ,  papa’s  helmet  is  off .  grogu  reaches  a  tiny  green  claw  up  and  touches  his  face .  he’s  real .  he’s  here .
