From Across the Pond

“Probably, but it’s legit in my case. Can I have an extension though?”

“I’ll give you an extra 24 hours.”

“Yes, well, hoping for the best did not help me so well, so I think I will stick with my realist ways.”

“Then I will hope for you.”

“Well, uh, yeah. Look, I know I’m failing but literally it isn’t my fault. My dog literally ate my winter homework.” 

Adele raised an eye brow at this. “You do know that that is the most commonly used excuse to get out of turning in homework, right?”

“Adele, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but I am no optimist. I am a realist.”

“When it comes to relationships, you have to hope for the best.”

“Okay, I know Rachel and Lily are two years apart, but I still think they can totally be friends. Especially if they end up going to school together.”

“Oh, certainly.” Adele smiled. “What house do you think Lily will end up in?”

“Mm, so wandering aimlessly it is.” He chuckled, nodding as he tugged on her hand, going off to their right.

“I like to think of it as exploring.”

“I love you, too.” He murmured affectionately, leaning over to kiss her temple before opening the door for her. 

Excitement coursed through her as they entered the tea shop. This was the place where her life had changed forever. “It feels like just yesterday that we were in just in here. I remember leaving, running home and telling my dad all about you.”

“She’s beautiful.” He said softly, agreeing. He knew it meant a lot to Adele, that they were able to honor his mother-in-law this way. Wrapping his free arm around her shoulders, he pulled her close, kissing the top of her head.

Adele smiled up at him. “My dad called to wish us Happy New Year.”

“No, and I suppose it doesn’t help having your dad around every time your turn a corner either. Not exactly building up any homesickness when your only family is there with you,” he laughed halfheartedly.

“Good point. I guess Rachel’s going to have an even harder time wanting to ever go home, since she’ll have both Zeke and me here with her.”

“Mhm, I’m sure,” Spencer hummed, certain that she believed it, but not finding himself quite so agreeable himself. “Someone has to continue the species.”

“Someone? Not you? I think you’d make a wonderful father. If you ever put your mind to it.”

“If I find someone I will let you know. You, Keyara and Victor can celebrate the end of my single life, however short that ends up being.”

“Oh, come on. You have to be optimistic.”

“I don’t know, it looks so different, doesn’t it? But the same. It’s weird.” He smiled, holding her closer against him. “Maybe it’s just us that changed.”

“Maybe.” Adele smiled. “I love you.”
