                    𝑮𝑹𝑬𝑬𝑵  𝑬𝒀𝑬𝑺  𝑻𝑼𝑹𝑵  𝑪𝑶𝑳𝑫  𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑵  they  meet  hers  ,  and  ginevra  already  knows  what  is  about  to  happen  .  a  vicious  cycle  they’ve  fallen  into  ,  a  friend  avoiding  her  whenever  they  come  close  to  crossing  paths  ───  it  doesn’t  take  much  thought  to  make  an  educated  guess  on  the  source  of  the  newfound  distance  that  stretches  out  like  a  chasm  between  them  .  not  when  the  coveted  crown  has  fallen  upon  ginevra’s  head  instead  of  adaline’s  ,  in  a  turn  of  events  that  tries  to  claim  their  friendship  as  victim  .  but  not  yet  ───  no  ,  ginevra  refuses  to  give  up  that  easily  on  one  of  her  friends  .  ❝  wait  ───  ada  !  ❞  ginevra  feels  like  a  stranger  in  her  own  flesh  as  her  voice  is  raised  to  a  yell  in  order  to  cut  through  the  music  as  she  weaves  through  drunken  partygoers  ,  thankful  that  sobriety  keeps  her  vision  sharp  .  the  other  is  trailed  ,  until  ginevra  finally  catches  up  and  grabs  ada’s  arm  ,  attempting  to  turn  her  around  as  brown  eyes  turn  pleading  .  ❝  ada  ,  please  stop  avoiding  me  .  let’s  talk  .  ❞

      she  ‘  s   stopped   .   alchohol   in   her   veins  ,   and   rage   in   her   heart  .   she   loses   balance   for   a   second   .   erpentine   eyes   flicker   between   brown   hues   ,   and   the   hand   gripping   her   .   bold   .   something   she   would   have   never   expected   from   her   .   a   smile   blooms   upon   carnation   lips   .   practiced   ,   and   calculated   .   ice   cold   and   honey   sweet   .   “   i ‘ m   not   avoiding   you   ,   ”   she   is   .   her   head   lilts   ,   and   her   brow   knits   in   faux   confusion   .   her   eyes   dont   meet   hers   anymore   .   “   i ‘ m   just   getting   a   drink   .   ”     

               she   doesn ‘ t   like   her   .   not   what   she   knows   of   her   ,   nor   what   she   has   heard   of   her   .   eden   .   the   prime   example   of   her   circlet   dropping   the   ball   with   their   picks   for   this   year   ----   she   remembers   her   vote   on   the   girl   last   year   ,   and    here  ‘  s   the   outcome   of   her   circlet   ,   once   again   ,   not   listening   to   her   .   now   they   stand   .   side   by   side   ,   ordering   different   drinks   at   the   same   bar   .   a   withering   look   .    “   nice   costume   .   ”

                it  ‘ s   cold   .   a   white   shirt   dress   ,   flowing   gently   in   the   cool   air   of   the   october   night   .   the   stars   shine   above   the   ancient   castle   ,   twinkling   to   the   beat   of   the   music   inside   .   the   roof   ,   a   perfect   place   for   air   ,   and   a   smoke   .   she   lights   it   up   ,   and   takes   a   drag   .   and   for   a   second   ,   she   does   feel   very   holly   golightly  -   ish   .   she   finds   him   by   the   parapet   .   what   would   be   a   forest   by   day   ,   by   night   there   is   no   telling   where   it   ends   ,   and   the   sky   begins   .   all   black   infront   of   them   .   an   impish   smile      “   admiring   the   view   ?   ”

                 annoyance   .   it  ‘  s   written   across   her   face   as   she   weaves   her   way   through   a   croud   ,   desperate   to   flee   julian   harris   ,   trailing   behind   her   .   sweaty   ,   and   drunk   and   insisting   that   they   belong   together   she   spots   him   then   ,   a   fallen   angel   .   salvation   .   “   i   need   a   drink   .   ”   she   doesn ‘ t   mention   julian   .   he  ‘  s   harmless   ,   and   probably   scared   of   bas   .   she   loops   her   arm   around   his   .   “  come   with   ?   ”

       spirited   .   there   is   a   smile   upon   fine   features   as   she   weaves   her   way   through   the   dance   floor   .   fluorescent   blues   and   violets   light   her   way   .   she ‘ s   with   her   friends   ,   and   she   has   nothing   to   worry   about   tonight   ---   it   sours   ,   when   she   bumps   into   a   familiar   figure  .   clad   in   red   .   she  -   devil   ,   she   muses   ---   smile   long   gone   ,   green   eyes   turn   cold   as   they   meet   brown   .  tension   ,   and   the   crowd   around   them   goes   wild   to   disturbia   .  “   ---   “   the   diamond   turns   away   ,   and   she   makes   her   way   towards   the   bar   . 

        nights   like   these   .   the   lights   ,   the   music   .   for   the   night   ,   she ‘ s   not   adaline   ülker   .   she  ‘ s   not   a   goddess   ,   nor   a   queen   .   she  ‘  s   just   a   girl   in   a   sea   of   people    .   she ‘ s   the   beat   ,   she  ‘  s   cheap   liquor   .   youth   .   she   links   her   hand   with   her   friend  ‘  s   “   ----   let ‘ s   dance   !   ” 

green   eyes   meet   their   reflection   in   the   mirror   .   red   rimmed   .   in   the   mirror   ,   there ‘ s   just   a   girl   .   in   the   mirror   ,   her   eyes   grow   colder   ,   darker   .   sharper   .   her   back   straightens   ,   as   if   in   a   trance   .   no   more   .   they   think   they   know   what   they   want   ?   then   so   be   it   .   

                     HOLLIS LOOKS AT ADALINE AND smiles, so much of him wanting to believe every word of her confidence, to drink it up like holy water. he doesn’t show it, not outwardly, but hollis is anxious, nerves in a frenzy as he hasn’t turned to get help from his vices — YET. so much of him believes her, supports her even if he he knows mia DOESN’T, adaline happens to be one of the few things he and his twin sister don’t see eye-to-eye on. to hollis, the circlet is his family: like the vines that grow on the side of the manor, their fates are just as intertwined, supporting each other on their paths to the TOP. “ always, ” he says, with a re-affirming nod. he has love for ada, he DOES — she looks at him like she believes in him, and he vows to always return the favor. just not in the way, perhaps, she desires. “ how can i get some of that confidence, huh ? ” he asks, a thumb caressing her hand mindlessly — as if confidence will solve hollis’s slew of problems he can hardly wrap his own head around: emotions, career goals, the lot. “ you should smile more. it looks good on you. ” he concludes with a nod as he retracts his hand, severing their touch. he gestures down the stairs of the foyer, taking one final breath. “ after you. ”

       “   confidence   ,   darling    ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶   ”   she   speaks   ,   sure   of   herself   .   straight   backed   ,   clad   in   jewels   .   she   speaks   with   the   weight   of   generations   of   both   :   ülkers   and   beauharnais   before   her   .   she   speaks   the   words   of   her   grandmother   .   she   speaks   ,   as   if   she   were   not   unsure   herself   .   “  is   merely   pretending   ,   until   you   don ‘ t   have  to   .   “   she   smiles   ,   and   he   speaks   .   her   smile   falters   ,   for   a   mere   second   .   she   removes   her   hand   from   his   as   he   removes   his   hand   from   hers   .   her   smile   returns   sharp   and   practiced   .

     ❝ i’m almost tempted to return the compliment. ❞ though a mask adorns her face, it’s difficult for the amethyst to hide her true colors. and, while amity and union may be the maître-mots of the evening, the sourness between she and adaline cannot be so easily erased. ❝ it’s incredible to see what a smile and some civility can do to your overall demeanor, isn’t it ? ❞

     “    ah   ,   there ‘ s   no   need   .   ”   there   is   triumph   alight   in   emerald   eyes   ,   yet   the   lioness   feigns   purity   .   a   white   flag   so   thin   that   you   can   see   right   through   it   .   the   characteristic   smugness   of   pulling   ahead   on   the   seemingly   eternal   case   of   ülker   vs.   carter  -  harrington   .   “   practice   as   you   preach   ,   dear   .   ”   everything   feels   so   uncertain   ,   yet   the   bitter   familiarity   of   diamond   &   amethyst   brings   a   certain   comfort   .   she   smiles   ,   and   her   smile   is   sweet   .   her   smile   is   poison   “   you ‘ re   acting   like   you ‘ re   on   your   way   to   a  funeral   ----   not   a   party  .   well   ,   with   the   prodigy   you   chose   it   might   as   well   be   your   lineage  ‘  s  .  ”
