A halfling is curled up against the walls of the rotting castle, doing her best to keep warm. She had no essentials, no food provisions, no fire.
It was only her.
Various bruises and cuts covered her bruised skin, her form curled inro a tight ball. Heavy lidded eyes could barely make out the enormous figure ahead, too weak to even care of who or what it was.
She just wanted the sleep to take her.
#I hope this is okay for my OC Nori!
Blaidd steps forward, head inclined toward the small creature huddled in the ruins. He sighs as a light thud shakes the ground between them, a large blade stabbing the earth.
He kneels down with a grunt, a wolfen head entering the halfing's sight. Rather than lunging in for a kill, the creature seems... inquisitive instead. Like an abnormally tall knight, clad in a fur cloak and wearing a wolf's head?
"Gotten yourself into a bit of a mess there, have you? Tell me, can you hear me, still breathing and all?"
Blaidd lets out a sigh, visibly relaxing. He releases his grip on the blade hilt before settling back against the wall.
"It's alright, I'd rather a false alarm than a real one. Must've been quite the fright to jar you awake like that. I'll not pry, lest you need to get it off your mind."
She felt her chest grow tight, the memory of what had happened still fresh.
The pain was heavy in her heart.
With a weak smile, Nori went to Blaidd's side and sat right next to him. Her fingers dug into the fabrics od the cloak he loaned her, her small frame lightly pressed against his side, "I'll keeo watch with you...I...don't sleep much nowadays..."
He raises a brow for a moment but settles back into position, ears listening to the woods around them. Only the breeze and movement of a few scant animals in the underbrush disturb the night.
"I understand the feeling. Some days, those thoughts you push away find a way to creep upon you, like the dark of night itself."
Nori gave a small nod, trying to force the memory of her past down.
"That's true...even if the memory is forced down, it can find a way to sneak up on you..."
She swallowed thickly, not daring to speak again as her nightmare flashed before her eyes. The halfling lowered her gaze to her feet, her voice shaky and soft, "How do you keep the nightmares at bay?"
He thinks a moment, on how to offer council without betraying too much.
"Duty, I suppose. Keeping one's eye to the destination while on the path. Charting one's path helps keep the mind off where it's been I'd say."
He looks a bit distant for a moment, looking toward some unseen horizon.
"You just hope it's all worth it when you get there."
She pulled her knees to her chest, her own gaze distant, "I wonder about that to...maybe if I were stronger, I could've saved my peers..."
He is silent for a few moments, not wanting to stir old wounds, but just nods softly.
"A warrior's burden, every time. Enough training, enough power, enough skill... enough luck? It's always something that could've gone different." He thinks, scratching his chin in thought.
"But that's always regret. I think... you probably did all you could. You don't seem the type who wouldn't. Just making it this far with the injuries you had? Hell of a spirit to keep crawling even at death's door."
The halfling gave a small nod, her eyes moist with unshed tears, "Then...why do I feel such a weight on me?"
Her hands balled into shaking fists, her voice cracking, "It's not fair...I should be amongst my brothers and sisters now...it's not right..."
"I'm guessing you're not too familiar with these lands... fairness is a dream as distant as the setting sun in the Lands Between. Injustice has been wrought for a dog's age."
He shifts his weight a bit while craning his neck, looking for anything that might cause trouble. He relaxes a bit seeing nothing for the time being.
"When you say you wish to join your brethren, do you mean where you hail from, or...?" He gestures with a his head a bit toward his blade.
"In death..."
She says it bluntly, the sorrow in her tone evident.
"You're right, i'm not familiar with these lands,.or this world for that matter. I come from a world called Exandria, from a place called WildMount. I was part of a temple that followed our deity known as the Platinum Dragon. But the temple was set ablazed by rogue thieves and-"
Nori hiccuped a sob, the tears flowing down her cheeks freely, "-I couldn't save them...I shouls be dead...I don't want this..."
The weight of guilt finally smothered her, face buried in her hands as she sobbed softly.
A large hand gently rests on the halfling's shoulder, Blaidd furrowing his brow.
"Enough. Not every battle is a victory, being a fighter, a warrior, that's just how it goes. You've suffered, greatly, but don't throw away a second chance."
He relents his grip, resting his arms on his knees, contemplative. He'd offer better council, but Ranni would have something to say about it, lest he let slip too much.
She allowed his words to sink in, her hands slowly slipping from her face. Soemthing about his demeanor brought her comfort, like her mentor once did.
It felt like home.
Wordlessly, she nestles into his side, fresh tears welling in her eyes.
He grunts slightly as he adjusts his position - not to drive the small woman away, but to ease his back against the stone wall behind them. He reaches over and adjusts the cloak about them, to give them both a bit more warmth.
"I'm... sorry if that was harsh. I'm not too good at comforting folks like that. Lone wolf, if you'd believe it." He offered a slight smile, though still had a concerned expression.
She glances up briefly at him, a small smile on her lips, "It's fine...you remind me a lot of my mentor...they were like that too..."
Hesitantly, she wrapped her arms around his torso, gace pressed against him as the halfling tried to hold back a sob.
He leans his head back against the stone wall, rolling his eyes a moment. By the Erdtree, what's he gotten himself into?
"Here, it's not much but it might help you sleep a bit." He reaches into a small pouch at his side, producing a ground up flower.
"It's called a Trina's Lilly, helps one rest. A deep, dreamless sleep. Leaves one feeling awful in the morning, but, rest to those who need it. If you wish."
Nori looks at the item closely, wiping the teats from her face.
A dreamless sleep?
When was the last time she actually rested?
"Do I just take it as is or no?"
"Just chew it a bit and chase it with some water. Boiling it or anything like that makes it more potent, too strong and you weaponize it." He considers a moment before splitting the plant a bit.
"Might be best to offer a little, all things considered." He isn't trying to make a short joke, but it might be hidden there, just slightly.
She gives a small nod, taking the powered flower and taking a small amount and downing some water shortly after.
"Just lean back and close your eyes. It will do the rest. Don't fight the sensation, trust me, you won't win. It's the only thing that calms me on the worst nights."
He pauses a moment before resting a hand on Nori's shoulder.
"And don't fret, I'll be here while you rest. Just try and sleep." He nods.

She looks up at the stranger, somewhat startled at the sudden appearance.
But he wasn't attacking her, which made her relax slightly.
At his question, she managed to choke out, "I-I'm alive...barely..."
"Name's Blaidd, so you don't have to keep wondering if I'm going to have a nibble of you. Don't worry, I won't. What happened, one of the bears get you?"
He holds up a hand, clad in a worn gauntlet. He extends it slowly but pauses, meeting eyes with the stranger.
"May I have a look? You're in rough shape."
She gives a small nod, her small hand engulfed in his large one.
"I'm Nori...former Paladin..."
The halfling lets out a yelp as she goes to stand, falling onto her knees from the throbbing pain, "M-my ankle...I think it's twisted..."
"A paladin..." He thinks for a moment. Someone from the Golden Order? Could be trouble, but they did say former, so no one's probably expecting them right yet.
"You'll be something's dinner before nightfall if we don't get you somewhere safe." He thinks a moment, then his muzzle twists into a somewhat wry grin.
"How do you feel about heights?"
Nori releases a dry chuckle, "I've fallen off a dragon five hundred feet in the air, so I'll be fine..."
She releases a bloody cough, crimson liquid speckling her tunic.
"Right then. Hold on, and, apologies in advance."
He swings his word over his back, locking it into place, before in one smooth motion scooping up the small figure in the ruins.
"We need to get those wounds treated. It's not exactly free from exposure but a secure spot is better than nothing right now. Hold tight."
He inhales sharply before grunting as he leaps up through the air, hopping along the ruins walls, heading toward the tallest spire among them.
She holds onto his chest plate with a pained whimper, feeling the air rush through her hair as he leapt.
At least she wouldn't be a target for predators.
Her emerald green eyes widened at the spire, a gasp of awe escaping her lips.
"Just a moment and-HUP!" He lands with a slight skid, stones tumbling down into the empty hall below. A slumbering Rune Bear nearby kicks in its sleep at the disturbance, before going back to snoring.
He taps the bricks beneath them a few times with a boot before seeming content, and gently setting Nori down.
"Helps me keep a watch in these woods, lest someone get the drop on us, eh? Here." He reaches beneath his cloak before producing an ornate looking crimson flask.
"Try this, you'll feel better, promise."
She stares at the flask curiously, wondering if it was poison or something much worse.
It wasn't if she had many options.
The halfling grabbed the item from his massive hand, popping off the cape as she feels the liquid coat her parched throat. Nori slowly handed the half empty flask back to him, a weak smile on her lips, "Th-thanks..."
Blaidd nodded, stashing the healing casque away again after she drank. Hopefully it would help, but he wasn't fully sure - he hadn't quite seen any like her in the Lands Between before.
"You should feel a warm sensation, it grows in the belly then flows out to the limbs. It can be a bit intense at first, but you get used to it. You should see the lighter wounds heal, the deeper ones start to seal a bit. Hopefully."
Nori gives a small nod, feeling the effects of the potion working on the least harmful wounds. She looks up at him with tired eyes, questions filling her emerald gaze, "Do you live here by yourself?"
"Only when I must. Some errands about the woods and Limveld proper. Other haunts, other places, such is the fate of a wanderer." He offers a wink.
"You seem to have gotten some strength back, good. If you don't mind my prying, what brings you out to this lonesome place? All sorts of beasts lurking about the mist here."
Her face flushes red at his wink, feeling like a shy school girl. Nori cleared her throat as she tries to recall what had happened.
"I...can recall some bits and pieces...I was battling some sort of Wraith of sorts...they destroyed my my supplies and tried to tear my throat out...last thing I recall, was this bright light...and I ended up here..."
Nori gives him an embarrassed smile, a sheepish laugh following after, "I must sound ridiculous..."
He chuckles a bit at her reaction but bows his head a bit.
"My apologies miss, I'm not meaning to make you uncomfortable. Still, it's simply how things go in these lands. Some approach the fog and find themselves in worse places, others... well, not all survive the journey."
He looks about before holding out his cloak. A wind picks up from the north a bit.
"Doesn't look right rain tonight at least, but the mist will be heavy before sunrise. Best settle in for the night. Rest, if you can. I'll keep watch."
The halfling nods briefly, her head lolling onto his chest. A soft sigh escapes her, mumbling her thanks as sleep finally claimes her tiny frame.
Blaidd gently sets the halfling down in a secure spot atop the tower, among the ruined stones. He furrows his brow a moment before unclasping his cloak and draping it over her.
He shudders a bit at the bite of the wind, but braces himself, huddling down behind the shorn wall. Hopefully nothing disturbs his vigil over the night.
Nori curls into a tight ball beneath hia cloak, soft whimpers escaping her lips. Her forehead was covered in a sheen of sweat, her breathing shallow and hoarse. In seconds, she sat up with a loud gasp, her body trembling from shock from her nightmare.
Blaidd's eyes snap open with a start as he looks about, hand gripping the hilt of his blade - before he lets out a light sigh. Apparently he'd dozed off at some point himself.
"What's the matter, something coming?" He looks over the broken walls, keeping an eye out for any movement below.

"Doesn't look right rain tonight at least, but the mist will be heavy before sunrise. Best settle in for the night. Rest, if you can. I'll keep watch."
