Use of templates eliminate having to define styles, layers and layout every time you start a new drawing. Using templates can also improve the productivity significantly, save time and helps maintain a drawing standard. Defining a company CAD standard is a start to drawing productivity and consistency.

Use of built in Sheet sets or a document management system greatly help managing CAD drawings. Use of layer tools and external references (Xrefs) also help managing complex drawings.

Design Automation

Use of Text Fields, Dynamic Blocks, Annotation Scaling, Tool Palettes and Block Attributes help automating repetitive manual tasks within drawings.

Training Resources

Giving the design tools in the right hands can make a huge difference in a way design process is handled. Not every designer is aware of the features and tweaks available in the CAD software that can help improve the productivity. Conduct an internal training in the organization to allow CAD users to better comprehend the features of the CAD system they are using and also become aware about the tweaks that help in making the design process faster.

Progressive enhancement (PE) is a strategy for web design that emphasizes accessibility, semantic HTML markup, external style sheet and scripting technologies. A layered fashion design allows everyone to access the basic content and functionality of a web page using any browser or internet connection.

The first layer contains only the clean semantic HTML. This allows text-based, speech-based, antiquated and robotic user-agents to navigate the content of the website easily.

The second layer includes external Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This allows visual-based user-agents to display or alter the visual representation of the website's content.

The third layer includes the JavaScript. This allows user-agents that are capable of using it to provide users with enhanced usability. An enhanced version of the page is viewed with a more advanced browser software and greater bandwidth.

In summary, progressive enhancement is based on the following principles:

Basic content should be accessible to all web browsers

Basic functionality should be accessible to all web browsers

Sparse, semantic markup contains all content

Enhanced layout is provided by externally linked CSS

Enhanced behavior is provided by unobtrusive, externally linked JavaScript

End-user web browser preferences are respected

Progressive enhancement is well suited for projects that demand better user experience and higher user-agent (browser) compatibility.

What is Graceful Degradation?

Graceful degradation providing an alternative version of your functionality or making the user aware of shortcomings of a product as a safety measure to ensure that the product is usable. Progressive enhancement starting with a baseline of usable functionality, then increasing the richness of the user experience step by step by testing for support for enhancements before applying them.

When to use what?

Both progressive enhancement and graceful degradation can be used to accomplish the same thing: keep our products and services useful to every user. Progressive enhancement is more sophisticated and stable way but it takes lot of time and effort. Graceful degradation can be used more easily as a patch for an already existing product; difficult to maintain later on, but less initial work.
