Think all the colours used in the Kung Fu Panda films are random? Think again! DreamWorks Animation Production Designer Raymond Zibach talks to us about his work on the beloved animated features!
“One of my favorite things about animation is that the boundaries are as limitless as our imaginations. If we can dream it, we can make it. And if we do it well, audiences will believe it wholeheartedly.” –Dean DeBlois, director

“The biggest challenge on this movie was the scale and vastness of the environments coupled with doing a lot of ice, which is traditionally a very hard look to simulate in computer graphics. There’s a complex scattering of light in a piece of ice and replicating that into something believable, achievable, and affordable for our movie was really difficult.” –Mike Necci, digital supervisor, environments

"The Bewilderbeast is this absolutely massive reptile; the sheer size of this dragon made him different from any other beast in the movie. We wanted him to convey a sense of sheer superiority and supremacy.” –ZhaoPing Wei, art director

"We started the first Madagascar over ten years ago, a lot of us still worked very traditionally, with pencil on paper, charcoal and paint..." - Production Designer Kendal Cronkhite. How do you represent the artwork of @dreamworksanimation beloved films? Check out this video with our Senior Curator Sarah Tutton chatting with Production Designer Kendal Cronkhite about how they represented the Madagascar Trilogy.
“The trip to Norway really influenced the look of the movie…We went into ice caves that are a kind of blue I’ve never seen before; it is almost unreal because it’s so vivid. In the film, we tried to bring those splashes of color into something that would otherwise look monotonously white.” –Roger Deakins, visual consultant
