And finally, it is complete.

It began as something to keep me occupied.

It was finished as a meditation and a gift for my Mum.

The first anniversary of her cancer diagnosis is approaching and this week she’s have a secondary tumour removed from her brain. Hopefully this arrives in time for her birthday, as some sort of placeholder, until I move back to Australia in October.

Damn it. Women are so rare in the real baseball world, and then they take away what we had in fiction. Not only that, they take away a starring role from Kylie Bunbury while she sits out the pilot season out of loyalty and hope.

I read a poem today, written by a 22 year old man who has been incarcerated since he was 16, with another 30-odd years still to serve. He is spending 18 months in solitary confinement and he wrote about what he’s thinking when he’s staring at the cell wall.

I read it four or five times and couldn’t say much more in response than to thank him for sharing. It gave me the most extraordinary insight into his mind and the utter cruelty of solitary confinement. I wish I could share it with everyone.

Free minds is the organisation that shares prisoners’ poetry with the public.

Liberation Library is where I volunteered this afternoon.

Please find out where and when the science march(es) in your area will happen, and then go participate!

This is extremely important. While there is certainly some problematic science out there, our current government is now wilfully denying facts (e.g. about climate change) even in the face of overwhelming consensus on the part of experts.

We need to do everything we can to resist, and we must support science as a basis for policy. When the people in power prefer “alternative facts” (a.k.a. lies), we must say no.

This march is not just for scientists! It is for everyone who believes that science is worthwhile and important.

It’s exhausting being this angry every day. I’m in bed before 11, and just flat wiped out.

I’m starting to wonder about cracks in the foundation of this country, and how far off kilter we can go before it crashes down around us. Which would be an interesting premise for a novel, if only it weren’t feeling a bit TOO plausible these days.

I was feeling yesterday that this country is careening towards a crisis. Or that the Trump presidency is going to crash and burn spectacularly fast. But maybe this is it - a constant feeling of crisis and watching a train wreck is the new normal.

I cling tighter to my Australian passport everyday. But this disease of populism, nativism and disregard for fact feels contagious. No democratic country can be complacent.
