Couldn’t do this in 2012 - three years of barefoots and, despite ongoing plantar issues, I can do this exercise. 4 reps and I’m done. Aiming for 10.

Learnings from Vivobarefoot
The latest craze for barefoot exercise may offer more than just a novel workout and an excuse to give your feet a break from trainers.
A great piece on how the how the arches should actually be supported

4 Months on DMARDS
No effect that I can see. :( They may add Sulphasalazine to the mix. I'm keeping the PTT strong as the physios have shown me. Plus I give it an extra boost through my 99% barefoot approach. Barefooting has been the most effective treatment besides the steroid injection. My feet are stronger, more resilient and I have more confidence. Did a whole day of training 2 weeks ago and survived with only a slight need for co-codamol. Within 24 hours I was fine.
This is an interesting campaign. The shoe industry won't be happy I'm sure...
DMARDS? Pah! Exercise is working best so far
Been a while since I commented on this blog. I've been doing foot-twisting heel raises everyday for a few months. I can walk and do short runs, so there is hope. I've started hydroxy-chloroquine after the continuous diclofenac turned into an allergy nightmare. No effect after 1 month but I guess it will take time.
Ra!!!! RAAAA!! I can do heel raises!
I bought the vivobarefoot Ra formal shoes a couple of weeks ago. The heel area is very tight but I'm slowly loosening it.
Wore them out for a night out and am happy with them. Constant pressure and no support for the arch is working well. The supports still rapidly weaken the arch. It needs to be worked all the time!
I can stand on tip-toes finally! Today I even (lightly) ran down a Costco aisle and only experienced minor soreness.
The inflammation is still there but it maintains a certain level regardless of use. Not increasing or decreasing.

This is great intro correct arch and foot position. I had an ortho in Florida tell the same stuff in a more technical manner. This video is better than me trying to sound like I understand the mechanics!
With an accessory navicular, I find these positions give me aches and pains and cramps - reflecting the weakness of the foot I guess. But after a few days it feels a little more natural. There are more videos that I will link to when I remember.
Inflammation?
Hmm.. slightly suspicious of this diagnosis but I've been referred to a rheumatologist and a physio to remove inflammation and build strength in the tendon.
To be honest, I'm glad we're trying this and not surgery. the NHS is so LONG....
Strength has increased. I can stand on my toes and walk normally and at normal speed. I still have off days and the bone movement in the foot is crazy. If it moves wrong, I'm crippled for the day.
A flashback
When I was first diagnosed I was told that they would have to cut out the bone and slice my heel to slide it over (to improve biomechanics). I was heavily inflamed and could barely walk without drugs. I couldn't lift my weight with the PTT (couldn't raise myself on my toes on the relevant foot).
I was told this after a year of taking drugs because the NHS wouldn't refer me. I had been to acupuncture which was pointless (a pun!) and to an osteopath who had been able to help by randomly massaging the foot. No-one new what was happening.
Finally the orthopaedic surgeon diagnosed me. No advice, no handling of the issue. He just said I may walk again but probably wouldn't be running. This was fairly traumatising. I was upset with the issue, my G.P., the surgeon, the cranks that took my money - everyone.
Since then I've had a second opinion (to be sure), complained about, annoyed and finally made friends with (kind of) the doctors.
I have tried the NHS insole (complete shite - just use a door stop instead) and bought expensive bespoke insoles (excellent results). I've bought special shoes and tried activity and no activity. I've taken so many NSAIDs I've become allergic to them and am now stuck with Co-codamol. I've had one steroid injection into the foot and can only have one more. And I'm seeing the physio's who are trying their best.
I began my own research and discovered the history of foot ailments, problems with shoe design, our real biomechanical potential and the magic of proprioception.
This has been the route to where I am. Wearing barefoots/fivefingers lets me avoid drugs and gives me a feedback system to know when there's been too much activity. I don't know if I'm healing but I'm managing with minimal painkillers.
Hopefully I can increase the activity and avoid a second steroid injection.
Encouraging results
I spent 4 days walking about a hotel for a management course (in the vivo barefoots) and managed ok. Evenings were a little difficult but I'm general impressed that I managed it all without painkillers. No knee or hip issues either. Normal gait, occasional limping.
An interesting paper detailing the different variants of the accessory navicular.

This is interesting. Sounds like a better solution than the Kidner procedure. I wonder if this is possible in the UK. It would be interesting to investigate this and hear from patients.
I have no idea how this is going to work out. The ortho saw me last week and said the steroid injection is working so I should get physio and start building strength. Hmm..
I walked about a hospital in a rush today. I'm fine. I'm also surprised. Will push further later this week.
