Welcome! This is the official home-base for the Access Codes: Different Defaults zine. The goal for this zine is to explore and spread love for canonically disabled, chronically ill, and disablingly mentally ill characters!
Ideally we want this zine to be as accessible as possible, with a goal of releasing the zine in July of 2027. July is the chosen release month since July is Disability Pride Month!
If it goes well, we would ideally love to make this an annual or semi-annual publication.
We are currently compiling a full list of characters we would love to see featured. We are focusing on canonically disabled characters, or characters with substantial canon evidence as to being disabled across many comic eras on a long term or permanent basis.
Here is some characters we will for sure be looking for!
This is far from an exhaustive list of every disabled DC character ever, but it is a start to get people thinking! We will also be refrencing this post by @fancyfade, and the comments and reblog notes on it, in part with our own research and knowledge and community suggestions to compile a full list. We will also considering the results of the interest check on if we want just heroes/anti heroes, or also villains! (And a shorter interest check too if the big one is a bit daunting!)

Zine Contents
With the focus of this zine being disabled characters, we really want to ensure the most accessibility possible!
We intend to offer 2 physical print sizes, the larger print size will also include image descriptions beneath all artwork. The main font for both with be OpenDyslexic.
We also intend to create a variety of PDF options including a PDF option that will be specifically optimized for screen reader accessibility with thorough image descriptions, and a light and dark mode PDF with both text size options in OpenDyslexic, and a version of each size in a standard Serif font.
For merch, the main ideas we have are doing some custom printed lanyards, ideally 4-6 options. Custom DC themed disability FAQ/Alert cards that could be bundled with the lanyards or separate. Several post card designs. And multiple sticker options.
All of this will of course also be subject to the interest check. If there is something with little to no interest it will likely be cut and we will update this list accordingly!

Mar. 25, 2026: Contributor assignments given
Jun. 20, 2026: first check-in! Aug. 21, 2026: second check-in.
Oct. 30, 2026: third check-in.
Dec. 29, 2026: Final check-in.
Jan. 31, 2027: Assignments due.
Mar. 1st, 2027- May. 30, 2027: preorders. PDF only pre-sales will remain available.

Hi! I didn't see anything in the main post about the bingo but looking around the AO3 profile I see that it says anything that's above SFW will be removed from the collection. If that's true you may want to be very clear about it in the bingo event that it's only SFW just so people know and aren't disappointed when they make something and get it removed in the end. On the other hand if it allows NSFW that'd be awesome, too! There's a good many disability friendly NSFW writers in DC fandom. :)

Yes, I can get hat updated, if there is a lot of interest in an NSFW collection as well, I wouldn't be opposed to making a collection specifically for explicit works as well, that isn't necessarily tied to the bingo.

I'm not much of an artist myself, even though I really like your idea for a zine. I had a question about the Disability Pride Bingo. Is it exclusively for DC Comics / DC Universe characters? What I mean is: it is okay if if one of the characters in a fanart/fanwork/fanfic is in DC Comics/Universe and *another* isn't in DC fandom? I ask because I recently finished the first draft of a short fic which centers on Jessica Cruz, who has canonical social anxiety and agoraphobia, as she is depicted in My Adventures with Superman (season 3, episode 2). She meets another character voiced by the same person, who is not a DC series, and becomes fast friends with her (I don't want to spoil too much of the story). Would a fan fiction like that be acceptable for Disability Pride Bingo? Or not? Just thought I'd ask because I'd love to post it to the "Disability Pride Bingo" AO3 collection if at all possible, which is why I ask. I look forward to hearing from you.
Crossover fic is more than welcome! As long as the focus is primarily on the DC character :)

The bingo event is separate from the zine, as that will be released in 2027. July is disability pride month so we wanted something to celebrate this year while the zine is still in production.
For more information on the event, please refer to the ao3 collection and the event post. To enter the event, any works should be posted to the ao3 collection during the month of July. By getting a "bingo" through answering prompts on the board, there are fun prizes to win!
Hello hello. Some questions since all I see is info about the zine not about the bingo event. Is shipping allowed? What about NSFW content (disability pride rep in sex too!)? Or is this a G-rated only non-ship event that should focus on singular characters for each prompt? Just don't want to violate any rules but when I didn't see any rules on tumblr for the bingo, I figured I'd ask!

For art of characters, how much focus do you want on the characters' disabilities? Is it more "look at all of these cool characters that are disability rep" or like showcasing their disabilities? I might be thinking too hard about this 😅
A bit of both really! Highlighting their disability where possible would be great, but we also understand that this may be more difficult with characters with invisible disabilities. Above all we would like to see lots of disabled rep however artists and writers choose to display it!

We have made a disability bingo, as you can see by the images on this post. There are 25 total prompts and we will have some prizes as well! Minimum requirement is a complete sketch, or 500 words, per prompt.
~ For a bingo: you will get to pick from one of at least 6 mini emote packs! (There may be more!)
~ For a blackout: You will get ALL of the emotes!
BONUS: For the first five people to complete a blackout that is either at least line art, or a minimum of ~1000 (± 75) words per piece you will get a free digital copy of the zine when it releases next year!
