I know you don’t like Mariko (yeouch 🤕). She is a weirdo (tbh, all the girls are - minus Tomoko and maybe Nanako) but an incredibly charming one that makes me want to give her a hug. I really do love all the girls in the show <3
Would love to hear your thoughts on the rest of the sorority girls, Rei/Fukiko’s whole deal, Nanako as the main character, etc. (or really anything; I like how you dissect things :D)
I like Mariko fine. She does improve over time and really tries to get better, so she eventually won me over.
Coming hot off a recent rewatch so I have some fresh thoughts about the sorority and what it's supposed to represent. Despite the claim that it's inspired by American traditions, everything about the sorority seems very Japanese, particularly its strong emphasis on senpai-kohai dynamics. Mariko explains in the beginning that members get guidance from sorority senpai to "become more and more beautiful" and make wealthy connections into college and beyond-- presumably for the purpose of advantageous marriages (meanwhile Mariko seems to view the sorority as a benefit in itself and would not be interested in heterosexual marriage at all). The unspoken purpose of the sorority seems to be fostering a cohort of good wives and mothers among society's wealthy daughters-- for example, Nanako is encouraged to join higher class activities like the flower arranging club instead of her preference, the more middle class and down to earth baking club. The sorority sisters are drawn like adults, and at the studying party the scene looks like mothers instructing their children. It seems clear that the sorority senpai are supposed to be practicing motherhood, and that the sorority kohai "children" will eventually be expected to do the same for their future kohai.
But the sorority is also depicted as an extension of Fukiko-- her controlling pathology and obsession with maintaining her own status. So after Nanako's introduction to the sorority, the narrative focuses more on Fukiko as an erratic actor whose motivations are unclear. What's with her violent and sinister relationship with Rei? Why did she help Nanako get into the sorority, and why is she obsessed with Nanako's relationship with Henmi? Why is she always coming on to Nanako? Does she love Rei, Nanako, or Henmi? For a good chunk of the anime the audience is kept in the dark and pulled this way and that by her behavior as she uses her institutional power toward what could be one or more of these ends. So as an extension of Fukiko, the sorority's metaphorical alignment then becomes somewhat unclear-- is it a symbol of corrupted Class S-style relationships ("sisterly" love rendered into manipulation for curious ends, publicly justified as training for good wives and mothers)? Or is it simply a representation of the exacting demands of high society (Junko being kicked out for having temporary bad health and her grades going down and supposedly causing "shame" to the sorority, Fukiko warning Nanako about getting too close to a man even if she sees him as her brother because this could be seen as improper)?
After we learn that Fukiko is only using the implication of Class S style romance and/or seedy lesbian affection to manipulate Rei (successfully, at least partially over Fukiko's anger re: impure birth status) and Nanako (unsuccessfully, over Fukiko's obsession with unfulfilled hererosexual love), Nanako has quit the sorority and the sorority disbandment arc commences. At this point, the sorority mostly flattens into a simple symbol of class-based oppression, as well as an extension of Fukiko's high-minded "pride." Nanako, Tomoko, Mariko, and Kaoru in the meantime have modeled so many other healthy and normative behaviors for female friendships and same-sex crushes outside of the sorority structure; Fukiko is a self-absorbed abberation that has aligned herself with toxic old-world mentalities. So the narrative shifts toward Ikeda's interest in socialist student movements-- Kaoru's belief that there should be no organization that establishes and maintains an elite over the proletariat, the message that ex-members and rejected members are all "victims" of the sorority. Nanako muses on how some girls are invested in the benefits they recieve from that system and how abolishing it hurts them in a way, the political drama of the sorority senpai turning on Fukiko for allowing the "revolution" to happen (Ikeda really did love the French Revolution!!) etc etc.
It's hard to take the depiction of Fukiko and her pride seriously in this last arc, since she's used her institutional power for some pretty fucked up and selfish ends before the anime swings in this completely different direction (less interpersonal, more institutional). So it's unclear whether her behavior is really supposed to be all that noble and somehow a little redeeming, or if you're supposed to go "wait a minute..." about it.
It's interesting that at one point the sorority sisters question Fukiko's clear preferential treatment of Nanako, the implication being there is something seedy (and maybe gay?) going on between them... but mostly this seems to be a vehicle for Nanako to recieve more abuse from her peers, and then express compassion for their plight... hmm. Or maybe it's supposed to distance the sorority as a collective from Fukiko's self-serving behaviors so the audience can fully focus on the political message.
