In the show Abed is "aware of them being in the show."

Out of the show he is actually coping with the day to day. Observing, recognizing patterns, thinking scenarios as tv arcs to predict what might happen next. It's kind of an emotional regulation for him.

In my art and comics, my self insert is aware of her being a in a comic. Not for regulation. Literally. She is me and I actually control the narrative... Duh..

I apply what I understand about Abed and run with it as the moments happen.

He recognizes over time that Sy is into him. He picks up on her intrests so the slow burn cutesy shojo romance tropes.

The way Abed shows intrest is by using tropes from movies or shows. Essentially role playing. Quiet flirting without ever addressing it.

"This is what they do in movies."

I call this bit Meta-flirting.

Abed is "aware of the script" and is "playing the part" while Sy is aware of the script and is playing along. I thought it was a cool layer of meta.

It's always an almost moment. Never a confession so the "story" won't "end."

I being the artist, I like drawing out cute, quiet, close, flustered moments.
