Hello! I am seeking a Psych episode recommendation. I want to show an episode or two of Psych to my friend, because I discovered that they’ve never heard of the show before. Only thing is, my entirety familiarity with the show is based off seeing like three random episodes on late-night television a decade and a half ago, and your blog 😂😂 Do you have any recommendations for episodes that work well as a good encapsulation of the show’s vibe, or that you think are especially fun/good in their own right?
(the show came up because we were discussing Timothy Omundson’s filmography and we’ve seen Galavant and the Supernatural episode he was in and I said “oh yeah and he was in Psych, he played the detective guy” and my friend was like “never heard of it, what’s Psych?” and I think my brain made a literal brake-screech sound lol, it just seems like something that’s just in the public consciousness and I want to give them a good example of what the show is, so I figured I’d consult someone learn’d in the ways of Psych lol)
Totally! I always suggest starting in season 1 just so that you get the most basic of vibes. All of Psych is very ridiculous but I suggest entry level ridiculous for getting started.
If you’re here for Tim, then “Weekend Warriors” is an episode he is especially funny in.
Otherwise I think the Psych-est episodes from season 1 are “9 Lives” and “Poker? I Barely Know Her!”. They’ve both got good levels of tomfoolery.
My psych au where everything is exactly the same except lassie develops a massive embarrassing crush on gus after the tap dancing episode and he doesn’t do anything about it except be angrier than usual

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
I don't remember where I saw this piece of advice so I can't credit it, unfortunately
But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"
Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character
