A small fic which is a journal extract 

My darling, darling son. 

Oh my wonderful boy I wish I could write in here with as much hope as I did in those first few days but I can’t. The truth is son, I’m scared. Terrible, terrible things have happened since the first day when I held you and the world was still full of hope and wonder and I’m scared that there are more terrible things to come. 

There has been a terrible tension in town at the minute son between Mayor Elizabeth and a man named David Prentiss, actually, I think I’ve told you about him before, remember?  He was a great help during the Spackle war. 

Oh my son, those poor, poor Spackle. Believe me son, if you never listen to anything else in this here telling of things know that if there was any way I could have stopped what happened then I would have son, I would have stopped it and the Spackle would still be living in the swamp. I need you to believe me here son, I need to know that you will still be able to think good of your mother after everything I have told you about. 

The thing is son I’m scared for myself and the other woman of the town too. There have been men-only meetings in the Church and Cillian was brave enough to go along to one (Ben refused on principal) and find out what they are talking about. It took us almost an hour to calm him down son, I’m surprised he didn’t punch David Prentiss there and then.

I cannot tell you what he told us, my darling boy, you are too young. No matter how old you are when you read this you will always be too young. It’s strange but at times like this I can’t help but think about your father. You’re so much like him, Todd, I see a little more of him in you every day and I know that he is so, so proud of you son. Maybe if he were here things would be easier, or simpler, who knows but he is not and that is why, if what we fear is true Todd, you will be looked after by Ben and Cillian. They really are wonderful men and they will both love you more than you might ever realise. 

These are dark times Todd, and I can only hope beyond hope that you will grow up into a better time and I can only pray that I will be there to see it with you.
