Ikutaro Kakehashi, a man who was ahead of his time when he gifted the world the Roland TR 808 machine. So much so that when it was initially released in 1980, the sales of the product were a complete let down. The product was pulled from shelves after only three years of production and was seen as a failure. The drum sounds produced by the machine were viewed as too mechanical and computerised, and so that was that. Of course, the TR 808 wasn't gone forever. In hip hop specifically, the 808 lived on and became iconic. The sound that was once banished from the music world for its odd sounding drums became revolutionary in changing the sound of music for good. The sonics we hear today in mainstream music is heavily influenced by what the Roland TR 808 has provided. As for Rap music, we owe a lot to the product Mr. Kakehashi provided for us - the famous 808 is an essential part of the hiphop sound and will forever be an essential part of music history. Sadly Ikutaro passed away early April 2017, at 83 years of age.
