Beelieve it or not, this blue bee is the real deal! 🐝 Meet the blue carpenter bee (Xylocopa caerulea). This large bee can reach lengths of up to 1.1 in (2.8 cm); compare that to a European honey bee which typically grows up to 0.7 in (1.8 cm) long! Unlike honeybees, this critter doesn’t live in large hives, but instead spends most of its time alone. This insect can be found in parts of India, China, and Southeast Asia where it plays an important role in pollinating its habitat.

Excussse us… have you ever heard of the blunthead slug snake (Aplopeltura boa)? This nocturnal reptile, which can reach lengths of up to 33 in (85 cm), primarily feeds on slugs and snails. Unlike many other snakes, this species eats using a technique called mandibular sawing: To slice off the indigestible parts of prey, the blunthead slug snake slides its jaws back and forth like a saw! It can be found in parts of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Sumatra, and Java.

Have you ever seen a shy baby meerkat?
Lil meerkat peering around the corner.
While the crab-eating fox’s (Cerdocyon thous) name implies that crabs make up most of its diet, this canid is omnivorous and has a wide-ranging menu that changes with the seasons. It lives in parts of eastern and northern South America, where it’s found in forests, savannas, shrubland, and wetlands. During the dry season, it may snack more on insects; during the wet season, it favors crustaceans.

Happy Caturday! Meet the margay (Leopardus wiedii). Also known as the long-tailed cat, this critter’s tail can grow up to 20 in (50.8 cm) long. It ranges from parts of Mexico to Argentina and lives in forests, where it spends much of its time in the tree canopy. It’s well-adapted for life above the ground, with flexible toes and wide paws. Joints in its ankle can rotate 180 degrees, making this cat North America’s only feline capable of climbing head first down trees. These traits come in handy when hunting for agile prey like birds, small mammals, and reptiles.

Meet the cape golden mole (Chrysochloris asiatica)! Despite the resemblance, this critter is not a true mole. Instead, scientists consider golden moles to be part of the superorder Afrotheria, which includes elephants, hyraxes, and manatees! True moles are part of the superorder Laurasiatheria. Weighing about 0.1 lbs (0.05 kg), the cape golden mole spends most of its time underground, inhabiting tunnels that can be 656 ft (200 m) long. It hunts insects and small invertebrates by sensing their vibrations beneath the surface.
