Is because one time, he was going to pick up Dustin from Hellfire Club (except there was a miscommunication and Dustin was waiting in the wrong spot). So, Steve went inside to get him, and he heard Eddie loudly talking to his friends and assumed Dustin was there.

Only, when he got to the cracked door all he heard was Eddie say, “Yeah, no. I don’t want to be friends with Steve Harrington.”

And that’s all he heard before Dustin found him in the hall and started bitching about where were you??

So, Steve didn’t hear the second part when Eddie said, “I want to be more than friends with Steeeeve Harrington.” (Steve also missed Jeff, Gareth, and Frank loudly groan)
