Low back pain is one of the most common complaints in primary care offices, but the pathogenesis and presentation of low back pain can be highly complex from patient to patient. Taylor and colleagues attempted to define the incidence of low back pain and its associated risk factors in a systematic review published in the October 1, 2014, issue of the Spine Journal. Forty-one observational studies were included in the final analysis. The pooled estimate of the incidence of low back pain averaged during a period of 12 to 84 months was 26%. The incidence of low back pain was similar in comparing groups of participants by occupation vs more general research of community-dwelling adults. The most important risk factor for incident low back pain was a prior history of low back pain. Older age was not significant in predicting a higher incidence of low back pain, nor were patient beliefs regarding low back pain or decision authority or supervisory support at work. Poor general health was an inconsistent risk factor for low back pain. Observational research is limited by multiple potential biases. The current study employs a case-crossover design to eliminate potential confounding variables and further evaluate risk factors for acute low back pain.

The inter-professional practice committee also serves to define, promote and support professional standards that pertain to acupuncture and Oriental medicine practice in a patient-centered healthcare model such as values, ethics, teamwork, roles, responsibilities, and institutional healthcare practice.

The purpose of the AAAOM Finance Committee is to oversee all financial dealings of the AAAOM and provide periodic financial reports to both the Board of Directors and the membership.
