Teens aren’t addicted to social media. They’re addicted to each other. They’re not allowed to hang out the way you and I did, so they’ve moved it online.

Social media addiction article.
By Graham Jones
Friday’s edition of The Sun. 16/11/2012
This article hits the nail on the head in terms of the rest of my other social media research, I think anyway.
It talks about the amount we use social media when we are meant to be doing work. With reference to Barack Obama, tweeting instead of preparing a speech on his presidential race win.
' “Four more years” and uploading a snap of himself and wife Michelle online'
Then moves on to talk about our own experiences of or friends or loved ones using social media when they are out and should be talking to yourself or friends, not ‘jabbing away’ at their phones.
The Article then goes into deeper understanding of why we use social media, suggesting that we use mobile phones to feel loved and wanted, the amount of notifications we get; texts, emails, Facebook notifications, mentions on Twitter make us feel popular, it’s also a statement about being more popular than somebody else in terms of the amount of times your phone vibrates for example.
It briefly talks about the small amount of information we receive, suggesting that we need to concentrate more to absorb that information, which links to the Dopamine Loop that Berridge, K.C, Robinson, T.E. (1998) and Weinschenk, S (2012) state.
It also begins to delve further into the long term problems the internet is creating. Problems such as memory loss, or the lack of need to remember things anymore. Google maps and sat nav’s have got rid of the skill of orienteering from most of our lives, we only need to enter a post code and our devices take us to where we need to go. We no longer need to remember directions.
This is also true for a number of different things, that we can instantly just look up the answer for on the internet, we now can usually have that information instantly because of smart phones.
Will we see more of this problem when the mobile phone networks begin to roll out 4G, so that the mobile internet will be near broadband speeds?
The article closes with a nice quote that backs up the need for what my project should create.
'It's a wonder that we all manage to get along so well. We are paying less attention to each other, becoming more selfish, losing our memory and getting ever more desperate to find out more information about everything. Sometimes we should switch off the gadgets and talk to each other.’
Nice.
Social media addiction.
Kirsty Rollings
Friday’s edition of The Sun. 16/11/2012
'I am very nosy and I love to see what everyone else is getting up to by checking out their profile' She confesses.
'I won't date a guy unless he's on Facebook.'
'I broke up with my ex because he wasn't on Facebook. It drove me crazy'
She liked people to see that she was ‘in a relationship’ and who with, on her facebook profile. Kirsty broke up with her boyfriend because she couldn’t ‘Facebook stalk him’ to find out what he was doing, who his friends were etc.
All this information she could of found out by actually talking to him. Is conversation dead with our generation?
Social media addiction.
Stu Bradley
Friday’s edition of The Sun. 16/11/2012
'On average I tweet up to 20 times a day and I write a blog post once or twice a week.'
Stu writes a fashion blog in his spare time on evenings and weekends, in my opinion he’s using social networking correctly -
' I'm at work from 9am until 6pm, but I spend my evenings and weekends blogging, tweeting and attending events that I've heard about from my blog or from Twitter.'
The speed and easy to type and send something to thousands of people instantly is one of the reasons why social media has taken off. He’s going to events that people have tweeted about or that are in the network around his blog, fashion related I would expect. It’s easy to set up an event now, post it online and get a lot of people to attend, which allows them to interact face to face, which is what we all should use social media for.
'It's Pretty exhausting, but it's rewarding and it opens up a lot of opportunities for me. I do get compulsions to check Twitter, especially if I haven't been able to in a little while, but then I also feel almost liberated when I go for a bit without it.'
So he suffers from the dopamine loop, similar to the feelings I’ve been going through. You could argue that, using social media for event networking is the same problem, a loss of communication but I still see a great benefit in using the sites to arrange meet ups.
Social media addiction.
Emma Green
Friday’s edition of The Sun. 16/11/2012
Emma’s piece is similar to Kirsty’s.
'Sometimes I tell them to check my Facebook status, even when they are sitting right next to me. And no matter where we go or what we do, I'm taking pictures on my mobile to put up on Instagram.'
Kirsty’s is doing what my pet hate is, sat on her phone when she is with a group of her friends, I find it rude and completely unsociable to the people you are around. Sometimes it feels like your company isn’t good enough.
That last sentence is probably an extreme way of looking at it…
This commercial is hilarious. But it got us wondering - is there such a thing as too much social media? Or being addicted to social media? Having too many friends, too many connections, too much networking, being too “in-the-loop”!? Heresey, we say.
Maybe it will go the way of T.V. and radio addiction (yeah I guess they do exist, but society isn’t serious about them, probably because they were all glued to the T.V. and radio ourselves).
But if there were ever a bunch of social media addicts, it would be staff at Chatterbox. So we’ll keep an eye on ourselves. See if we recognize any addictive signs or symptoms.
In the mean time, send us your best social media addiction horror stories. We’ll top it.

#5 Social Media Addiction
Social media addicts spend so much time on these sites that it interferes with their sleep schedule and day-to-day life. Social media addicts feel anxious or sometimes even physically ill when they don’t have access to their social media accounts for even just a few hours. A new study says that Americans spend 16 minutes out of every hour using social media, so this one could be a widespread problem
my life in one post.
