i honestly think it's both! because jannik's desire to be one of the greats and his desire for carlos are VERY intertwined โ basically merged together: the same fire pushes jannik to play tennis and to pursue carlos, he can't be the greatest without beating carlos and he can't have carlos without the tennis of it all because it's the fundament of their relationship
and i don't mean to say that jannik thinks of carlos as a trophy or something โ absolutely not! but his want to be one of the greats isn't really about trophies either, or not just about trophies โ he doesnโt necessarily need to have more slams than djokovic, it's not about stats. it's deeper, it's more complex โ and so is sincaraz's dynamic

but yeah it's both for me! and i think sometimes jannik gets confused โ he thinks he wants to beat carlos when in reality he wants him, or he kinda uses carlos to numb/intensify the pain of loss (but only at first because i'm not big on toxic dynamics ๐)
