Charlie Sifford was the first African American to play on the PGA Tour and won the Long Beach Open becoming the first African American to win a major professional golf tournament on this date November 10, 1957.

He also won the United Golf Association’s National Negro Open six times, and the PGA Seniors’ Championship in 1975.

In 2004, Sifford became the first African American golfer to break into another exclusive club. Of the 100 previously enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, none were African American.

Dr. Mae C. Jemison, is an engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She was born in Decatur, AL, on this date October 17, 1956.

Dr. Jamison became the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

She has also written several books and appeared on many television programs including an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition to her many awards, Jemison has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

A prominent African American lawyer, Dean of Howard University Law School, and NAACP Litigation Director who played a significant role in dismantling the Jim Crow laws, which earned him the title The Man Who Killed Jim Crow.
