Bon's Art

A voxel is a 3 dimensional pixel, it is a staple of 3d gaming in certain areas, as it allows for pixel artists to make 3D assets, which is a whole new style.

Games with this style are:

Crossy Road, a voxel based infinite scroller game, where you are an animal trying to cross the road full of cars, and the water which is constantly rushing. The style of this game is very nice, it has a kind of simplistic nature to it. As well as using a very flat colour scheme, likely to mimic the naive nature of the animals, or to make it cater to a child audience.

The Touyst, a game I am not too familiar with, however it has a style that made me not even realise it was pixel art at first, as it perfectly meshes good texture work, with good voxel work.

Minecraft is an action adventure sandbox game which is the most played game in the world. It's style branches off based off of player base, due to its uniquely open source nature, people make mods, texture packs, or even whole other games inside of minecraft. The Minecraft style in and of itself is very distinctive, as it only uses 16x16 textures for every block and item, and then makes the pixels consistent in every animal and monster.

However, as I stated before, Minecraft in and of itself is almost an art medium, in a sense, as it allows those who use it to make amazing art all inside of it. For example, the creators on the Hermitcraft server (a server being a world multiple players can collaborate on), more specifically GoodTimesWithScar

He is a kind of artist in the community called a "Builder" this is due to him using the medium of minecraft building to create spectacles and in depth stories. Some examples of his work are below:

As you can see here, he uses several unique block palettes to show contrast, and he has an amazing and in depth understanding of shape and form. Especially using Minecraft's limited amount of colours, to be able to make something as simple as a gradient can be a challenge.

His builds have been an inspiration to me for years, and I truly believe he is one of the best builders in the space today. Along with a few others, to name a few

Mike is one of my favourite Minecraft skin designers, he is extremely talented and taught me most of what I know of skin design today. Some of his work is below!

Mike's style uses the outer skin layer on Minecraft skins to the most it can, he uses blending very uniquely, as well as making the skin's base skin very noticeable and eye-catching as mike's style. He has an amazing grasp of fabric and organics, as well as a genius understanding of translation to pixel art!

And our next focus...

Some people however, make resource packs in their own style of pixel art, but still somehow fit it into Minecraft's niche. For example, A large inspiration of mine @8onfire she makes skins also, however I am more enamoured by her amazing understanding of pixel art, be it shape, form, colour, or values, i think that Bon does a great job on all of them.

Here you can see Bon's ability to texture well, and to understand Minecraft's style to make something entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Now, finally I would like to analyse my old work doing weapon models for Minecraft resource packs.

as you can see in these images, i had a good grasp for weapon design, but I was far to mixel (mixed pixel consistency) heavy, and it wasn't in Minecraft's style. I do still enjoy these pieces, as they are in general very good. Its just that they sadly do not match the Minecraft style.

Some of my more recent models however, I have been trying to get to be a better fit for Minecraft, as I started doing it for my non-profit job and for commission. These are from my mod Sculk Shoot Up! (based off of a shoot up of mushrooms)

Nothing beats a relaxing day of pond fishing! I sure hope @8onfire's Bon is able to catch something good :P
