PRIDE MONTH

Pride month is always a rough month for me personally. I know the struggles most of you are going through with finding yourself and even finding support.

I want ALL of you to know that I am here for you. In any small way possible.

I am here.

You are all loved.

You are all valid.

Whether you’re gay, straight, bi, pan, trans or whatever…. you matter and you’re loved.

You were put on this earth for a reason. You just need to find it.

A few years ago I went to gay camp. This is a camp in the Netherlands for lgbtq+ youth. They get to meet others like them and get guidance in how to accept and love themselves, and how to tackle this world.

I was in a team with 12 kids. We had to do this “coming out talk” where we shared our stories in a safe and understanding group and setting. 8 of us talked about our thoughts and even attempts of suicide, to which our guidance counsellor said “thank god it’s only 8”.

This was in the Netherlands, a country known for being open-minded, tolerant, and overall safe. 8 out 12 kids had considered and even tried to take their own lives. This is not okay.

So please, stand by your friends who are lgbtq+, especially those in their teens. Being a teenager is hard enough on it’s own, struggling with your identity and/or sexuality makes it so much harder, especially in an environment that is not accepting.

But don’t think that lgbtq+ teens who live in an accepting environment can’t be struggling; support them too.

For those of you that have changed or switched your name or pronouns…

If you know someone who pulls a version of the “Ohh my gosh, I keep saying (old name/pronoun)! and I am  SO  sorry!.!” for a while

then you try to suggest ways to help remind the person about the new name/pronoun, or calmly encourage them to keep trying

and they get defensive, or dismiss you somehow, or generally make you feel bad or weird

you don’t need to be around them, and you’re not being selfish for distancing yourself

That’s super stressful and you don’t need that.

I know someone who will go back and forth between consciously using my old name and loudly and profusely apologizing over and over again, then whenever I correct them they either say “I know, I know, I’m trying, aren’t I?” or “Haha, I’ll get it eventually!” while reminding me that “I have problems too, you know.”

If you know someone like that who you can’t distance yourself from, just remember that things will get better, and there are so many people out there that will accept you and love you.

however, it is important to remember that the first ever pride was a riot. it is important for us to remember those who came before fought so hard for us so that we may be able to live the way we do now. in this month of happiness and celebration (as it should be!!!!!) we have to remember that the reason pride came to be is due to the fact that lgbt people were being brutalized by police.

do not let companies overtake our month in the facade of “support” when those companies haven’t given a damn any other months out of the year. do not let companies with homophobic/transphobic ideals sell our identities as products when we had to fight so hard to live happily without violence.

i know this “rant” may fall on deaf ears, but it is still a message that needs to be spread. feel free to call me a liberal or an sjw. i, frankly, could not give any less fucks. feel free to (!!!!!!!!!respectfully!!!!!!!!!!!!) give me your opinions, but understand that you cannot change my mind.
