DEAD or ALIVE

Rosalina only caught the tail-end of the interaction, or else she would have intervened sooner. She watched as Dice finished his transaction at the register, having just handed over a small bag of groceries to the cashier to be returned to the shelves as they could not be afforded.

She’d made up her mind by the time she paid for her groceries, and moved quickly out the front door of the convenience store, hoping to catch him before he got too far. His coat and hair were easy identifiers, so she was able to spot him and catch up to him before too long.

“Excuse me,” she said as she came up behind him. Bowing her head and holding her own bag of groceries behind her, she held out with her other hand the bag that Dice had to return, now paid for by Rosalina instead.

“For you.”

THE embarrassing thing was that Dice had totally thought he could afford groceries. He had assumed he’d stopped himself before betting it all, hadn’t even wanted to wager the clothes on his back as he normally would but evidently he’d spent more than he planned.

A look at his account confirmed it. He could barely afford a candy bar like this. His dejected face must have been visible from a  M I L E  off and he missed Gentaro who would surely have taken pity on him in such a sorry state.

Someone else seemed to have taken pity, too, though, for he heard a voice behind him. Green eyes widened at the sight of his groceries and he nearly felt like crying with relief.

“I do not understand the appeal of such a place.” It was far too noisy, and the constant flashing lights did nothing for his vision, or his senses.

“HUH? What’s not to like?”

 “…A lot of hyped up products don’t exactly reach the standards it sets when advertised.” well there was a lot of editing done on this one, but having lived in a era where most products were of live display. Seeing something he can’t touch could do nothing but add doubt to its validity. 

 “Modern technology does seem expensive to maintain as well.”

MODERN technology huh? Dice is capable enough of deducing that this means the man is not familiar with it, then. Is he from somewhere it’s not used, or is he just oldfashioned? He can’t tell from a glance.

“I certainly hope so.” Rung tempers his dry tone with a warm, patient smile, and stoops to offer his hand for a shake. He’s gotten more than used to instilling shock and confusion in his fellow residents, and he takes this one’s gasp in stride. Are you real? is actually quite a bit more flattering than some of the other questions Rung’s been asked by strangers here.

“Yes, I’m real. My name is Rung. I’m a Cybertronian, a mechanical lifeform from the planet Cybertron. It’s very nice to meet you. …may I ask your name?”

DICE does not seem to notice the dryness to the tone, but this is probably because he is distracted by the fact that he’s speaking to a REAL live robot. And a selfadmittedly real one at that. He smiled wide, as bright and happy as a man who’d just reached twenty-one in a tense game of blackjack.

a tired sigh parted the doctor’s lips as he stopped walking and allowed the other to catch up with him. it seemed that more and more familiar faces were arriving in spirale, the most recent being another member of fling posse. ramuda’s influence was clearly an infectious one, but jakurai cleared his throat in an attempt to regain some composure over the… less than wonderful greeting. 

“ hm, one of amemura‘s teammates? “ arisugawa, he believed. “ but you shouldn’t refer to me that way, really… “ he said so with a smile, the best he could do given the circumstances. “ you can call me jakurai. but yes, it looks as if a few of us have been brought to this place. i’m glad to see you’ve arrived unharmed, at least. “

THE reaction the doctor had to him was somehow not unexpected. His eyes shot toward the seemingly pained smile and then away again. People often had this reaction to Dice though he could not always tell why. He could wonder at what he had done this time or he could move on. The latter was always more APPEALING.

THIS might possibly have been the coolest robot Dice had ever seen. He hadn’t exactly seen real robots before but still, lips parted in a minute gasp at the sight.

SURPRISINGLY calm were Dice’s steps as he explored GOLDEN. Lots of this part of town was  U G L Y  if you looked beneath the veneer of bright color and loud noise but Dice always felt totally at home in ugly places that pretended not to be so. There was money to be made here if someone knew where to look and luckily Dice was always good at finding where to look.

IT is not money which he finds though as he spies a familiar  S H O C K  of pink go past.

RAMUDA! He pursues. Someone familiar is good here. Trouble, trouble.

VIRIDESCENT eyes fell upon a figure he really had not desired to see here. Not his least favorite member of Matenrou (for that  D U B I O U S  honor fell to the pathetic one) but this was the guy who had insulted Gentaro so egregiously and that was something Dice had not the capacity to forgive easily.

“LISTEN, you lend me some dust and I promise I’ll pay you back when I win big!” Dice had come to the point where he was begging strangers for money. Arriving here with basically nothing was not how he wanted things to go! It was unfair, miserable. Morals be damned in this desperate of moments.

“HEY uh....” 

SHIT, what was this guy’s name again? Dice really couldn’t remember and his mind felt like a spinning disc as he racked his brain for something familiar. Doctor something-something. No. That was stupid. He frowned, because it was on the tip of his tongue which danced over his teeth as he tested sounds out under his breath. It was of no use. He couldn’t remember. There was a certain string of annoyance to this.

WELL what had Ramuda called him?

The televisions is showing a new washing machine portable product. 

 “..Does that work.”

DICE stared at the television only upon prompting. The washing machine was nothing spectacular but there was definitely an effort to dress it up for the cameras. What kind of weird ass shopping channel was this?

               Volcan certainly hates it when he’s mistaken for a child. He hates it even more when they would call him cute. It is condescending and he isn’t cute. He is deadly and dangerous. He is Masmaturia’s bulldog! However, that doesn’t mean he is shying away from taking advantage of his appearance. He knows how these lanky monkeys love children. Well, most of them, anyway. His brother got the brighter and more child-like voice out of them though, but hell, he can do this, too! As someone’s walking into his direction, he jumps out of the little alley he’s been luring and right in front of their feet. He makes sure they’re stumbling over him and promptly squeezes out a few crocodile tears afterwards.

              “OWWW! That HURT!” Actually it did hurt a little, much to his own (very short) bewilderment.

THIS trick would work on others but Dice had played this game before. It could usually be risky but he didn’t really care about something like that. Risk was always part of the  G A M B L E  and so he pulled dangerous stunts from time to time. 

KICKING some kid was totally accidental though, and green-violet eyes shot downward to take a look at what had happened. If he was not familiar with this dirty trick already, he’d have been fooled.

Getting out a starter call for Dice, a gambling-addicted little shit. He’s lots of fun and always down to clown.
