Oh my goodness, Pearl this suggestion is FANTASTIC! Surprisingly enough, wholesome tropes are incredibly fun to twist into something darker and this one had a lot of potential. I ended up writing just under 1.5k which SHOCKED me! Honestly though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I even feel like I could have written way more if I had given myself more time. Anyway, here she isss I hope you’ll enjoy it! Don’t be fooled by the cute cover, it’s going to be messyyy!

Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins

A single saxophone flutters in the foreground; its rhythm twirls and races at a frenetic pace, yet somehow containing itself still within its designated layer. The lone sax doesn't allow itself to impovise — it follows an obvious path, renewing itself within the delineated limits. It's underlined by a deep, sensual beat that throbs underneath the surface of his skin alongside his quickening pulse. Oscar can sense inhibitions he was previously unaware of loosen up. Slowly, his eyes find Lando's sharp green gaze. His insides boil at the eye contact, his face growing hot. The nails inside of him, once clean and perfectly manicured, turn into claws, puncturing the tissue, bloodying their edges. He wills Lando to stay where he is, mentally begs him not to come any closer, for his own sake. In vain.

In light of recent events:

I will continue to write rpf, but I feel like this should be a wake-up call to anyone who partakes in fandom in general.

First off, authors are not responsible for what happens with our fics once they're posted. I archive lock all of mine, and for good reason. Because they're supposed to stay on ao3 (and we can talk about them here on Tumblr).

But you, as readers, are responsible for your own experiences. If you're not able to adhere to fandom etiquette (if you don't know what that is, ask) and in general, human decency.

I know we've all become very desensitized thanks to the internet, but harassment of any kind (whether that be insults, doxxing someone or even death threats) is NEVER okay!!!

Keep in mind that even if rpf is about real people, the stories we write about them are, and always will be, fictional. We are aware of that, the question I'm asking myself is if you are aware of that too?

At the end of the day, if rpf gets through to the people who it's about it sucks, but it won't kill them. They might be uncomfortable, granted, but they will survive. The writers you harass over it might not (there have been past cases of suicides due to harassment over rpf fics).

Tldr: be aware that your actions have consequences and that rpf writers are real people with real feelings.

With Rose (the author of Zero Cycle) announcing that she is taking down her fics and stepping away from the internet I think it's important to remind everyone about fandom etiquette.

This situation is not exclusive to rpf. I have watched this happen in pretty much every single major fandom. Klance Byler Mcyt, ect, they have all had a fic go extremely viral which then results in a downward spiral where fandom etiquette is thrown out the window and the author inevitably ends up pulling their fic from the internet and stepping away all together.

To be honest with you I am not surprised that this has happened again. I have been noticing for a while that the way people have been treating Rose and her fics has been absolutely terrible. Even people who were well meaning let their excitement about her fics cloud their judgement and cause them to be quite rude to her and disrespectful of fandom and rpf etiquette.

Therefore I would like to give some reminders to everyone about fandom etiquette. Because it's not just "keep all rpf discussion to ao3 and tumblr." those are important and those rules being broken certainly played a role in this particular scenario, but there's a lot more to it then that and as a fan you need to be more aware of how you interact with content.

Authors are not celebrities. They did not sign up for having an audience to deliver things to. They are fellow fans and creatives who are passionate about what they do. Because of this, I urge you, no matter how good a fic is, no matter how much you love it, you cannot treat it like a grand monolith for the fandom. When that happens the fic gets pulled out of its intended context and the author will inevitably be put under extreme strain and scrutiny. If you love a fic the best thing you can do for it is keep your interactions with and discussion of it purely to the ao3 comments and the authors askbox. I understand that creating a separate fandom for someone's works is done out of love and admiration but I have never ever seen it end well. When you create a fandom for a fic you are inviting typical fandom problems in and pushing them onto an author who did not ask for this.

You also need to stop treating authors like they are gods or something. I know this is usually done with the intentions of being complimentary. But an author is a real human being who deserves compassion and kindness. When you treat them like something to be worshipped you are inevitably dehumanizing them and making people feel more comfortable saying horrific shit to them or just generally being disrespectful. While it is also bad to get too parasocial and act like an author is your close personal friend, going towards the other extreme is also harmful. It is also just uncomfortable in general to have people act like you are not just a normal average person existing in the world. Authors are amazingly talented of course and that should be appreciated, but that does not rank above the fact that they are a normal person who would just like to interact online like anyone else.

The most important thing to remember is respect above all else. Because authors are human beings who deserve it. Being talented at something should not exclude them from that right. I ask that you take the time to reflect on the way you talk to/about authors and double check that you aren't accidentally forgetting about that.

Also last reminder for this particular situation. Do not complain about Rose taking down her fics. She does not owe you anything. You do not get to be upset that someone who has had their boundaries crossed over and over again and has been repeatedly disrespected has taken steps that are in her best interest. You are not the victim in this situation, do not act like it.

I'll continue to write rpf, even if it's fuelled by nothing but spite and sheer stubbornness, but I turned anon off in my inbox as a safety precaution.

I have been lucky that I haven't received hate/harassment of any kind and have found a lovely community here on tumblr, and if it stays that way, I will keep writing.

I think we really need to pause and think for a second. Just think. Use your goddamn noggin. FOR ONE SECOND!

UNACCEPTABLE!

WHO the HELL are you to threaten an artist in their inbox?? When did it become okay for people to comment about a fic under the real people’s posts? And why do you think it’s okay to blame the author for YOUR appalling behaviour? Don’t y’all have any shame? Your dumb decisions will have consequences and the consequences are that talented authors like Rose will disappear from the internet and EVERYONE will be deprived of the art they choose to spend time on FOR FREE!

Shake in your fucking boots because this kind of attitude will not be tolerated by the fandom. This needs to end NOW.

Respect the rules of RPF. Use the ask box as it is intended for use (sending appropriate questions and showing your love to creators).

From now on my anons will be deactivated. Harassers will be blocked and reported. If you don’t like a fic, DNI! If you like a fic, KEEP IT IN THE FANDOM! That’s what platforms like Tumblr and AO3 are for.

I can’t even fathom why people are filled with such VITRIOL for artists who didn’t deserve any of this to happen to them, and likewise it escapes me that people are so unwilling to respect fandom rules.

I’m going to blow off some steam now but I hope this stays in your heads for good.

Little update on the horror ficlets asks!

I’ve been falling a little behind with fic writing these past couple weeks but I can safely say that two requests are now in the works! I’ll try to get them both done by the end of next week (I make no guarantees but we’ll do our best).
