I worked at Urban Outfitters for 6 months so I’ve got all the info you need on lifting from there.
Usually I would say “no” to stealing, but I fucking hate this company with all of my being because of the CEO and the sexist/racist/ablist/body shaming shit they sold in the past, not to mention the “vintage fake blood splatter sweater” from a university that had a school shooting. Completely fucked up. Also, they steal independent artist’s designs and put them on their clothes. Do some research on this awful company and the CEO’s strategic intentions selling “pro LBGT+” merchandise, but being anti-gay to take the money from the people he hates. Read up on that here. A mega company like this makes billions, so what does it matter that you stole $500 worth of over-priced clothes that fall apart anyway? My store made $19k average per day. ANYWAY…on to the tips. (:
My store had zero cameras. Some have them in the sales section or at the registers, but that’s it. Our number one goal (other than guest satisfaction) is loss prevention. We are very strictly trained on LP and get quizzed about it occasionally when working. Managers will pop up and ask an LP question and expect the correct answer because of how well we were trained.
Best Time To Go: When it’s busy. Duh. If the fitting room has a line, you it’ll be so much easier to get away with your untagging and bag stuffing/clothes switch outs. Winter break is crazy. Summer can either be super slow or to the extreme crazy. My store is in one of the post popular tourist spots in the USA. Tour groups from Brazil practically filled the store during the summer. There was so much going on that we were always running around getting things for people in backstroke or different sizes that LP was so much harder to keep up with.
Tags: All soft tags have sensors IN them. Bend them multiple times in different places and make a half rip down the middle so it’s still connected, but ripped. We have hard tags (magnet censors) on almost all of our clothes except panties. Sunglasses are the easiest things ever. Just slip them out of their paper hangers and drop them in your bag when no SAs are nearby.
Fitting Rooms and Leaving Fitting Rooms: Sneak some tagged stuff in your purse before going into the fitting room. Bring an empty coffee cup into your fitting room. One that isn’t see through. (A starbucks hot cup.) Use really strong magnets to take them off and put them in the cup. Always have a fuck ton of stuff in the bags given to you at the front of the store. They’ll let you in with 6 items (sometimes 10 if they feel like it), so if you have a bag full of stuff, they’ll count it, but leave it on the back of your door so you can switch clothes out after trying them on. When you decide what you want, manage to put the stuff with tags on that you slipped into your purse earlier into the store bag as you come out with your handful or bumbled clothes and the clothes you want without the tags in your purse. DO NOT LEAVE ANY CENSORS OR TAGS IN THE FITTING ROOMS. EVER. WE CHECK AFTER EVERY CUSTOMER LEAVES THEIR ROOM. Over, under, and around mirrors and we check under the seats. Every. single. time. MAKE SURE THAT YOU GIVE THEM BACK THE NUMBER OF CLOTHES THEY COUNTED AND MAKE SURE IT’S IN THE BAG WITH THE HANGERS SHUFFLED AROUND A BIT. And be the shitty customer that leaves a few hangers in the fitting room. Or give them back a certain number and say you’re “taking these 4″ or whatever. Just put those four or however many on a rack in the sales section and put your coffee in a trash can in the store (if any) as long as it isn’t near the register. If there’s no trash cans, go to the home section, crutch down to look at something on a lower shelve, and shove it in the back.
Exiting/Bag Checking: Leave immediately. If the censors go off, keep walking and don’t look back. They can’t chase after you. They’ll call the mall security and give them a description to look for you, so I’d suggest just leaving the mall if any of this happens. UO is NOT ALLOWED to look in your bag if you say no. If they insist, tell them that they aren’t allowed by policy and leave before they call a manager over. Usually, when the censors go off, a manager comes over really quickly regardless. So be quick about it. Most people aren’t really smart about that stuff, so they don’t say no to bag checking and they get caught.
With this method, you will be successful! Be very careful and chill about it. I would catch 3 people lifting per week, average. LP is top priority with this company, so be smart and extra careful. They watch guests like hawks!
